I heard that ghilie suits were removed because you couldn't see the players model from 200m and further so they were useless, but I watched PR 0.9 testing and I saw that now those models (helmets, SL backpack, ghilie suit...) will be visible, so are the ghilies comin back?

lets pray... the sniper kit its so nerfed by now, no instant kill headshots, no camoflage, shitty stabilization time.

Generally snipers within the battalion or regiment don't use Ghillie suits when you're talking about conventional Armies like the USMC, US Army, British forces, you name it. No more of that vBF2 stuff. They'll wear it when needed, but normally on a usual recon patrol, they won't. Theres a video with a few US Army snipers in Mosul I think who have set up in a building (Window not rooftop) battling insurgents in a heavily populated area, they wore no camo. SF guys may use Ghillie suits on dedicated sniper operations.
About that quote there, the Sniper kit is fine as long as you know how to use it. Long range Headshots can be acheived if you can settle it long enough, remember, sometimes its better not to take the shot.

Nice thread ! I saw that news too and I didn't about it before. It could be a nice freature back in 0.9.
I've been playing ArmA 2 lately with a friend and the sniper missions with all that camo stuff looks super cool.

Well, this topic is about the ghilie suits, I don't understand why this angry post. Try to make a more construtive idea here.

Snipers. Don't. Always. Use. Ghillie.
What Drunkenup said
Most conventional and even Asymetrical groups don't use ghillie all the time. They may use scrim net, veil or other forms of head camoflague. But the fact is a lot of them are in plain uniform. If they wore ghilie, sure they'd be hard to distinguish once they'd settled down. But when you're moving around in an urban invironment the last thing you'd want is to stick out from everyone else
Besides, I don't know how useful ghilie would be on the bf2 engine anyway, grass disappears at distance so you'd still stick out like the dogs proverbial.

Personally I'm not a fan of the ghillie suits either
but should it be possible to render kit-geometries at range with the 0.9 patch then we could let the individual player decide if he wants to wear a ghilli-suit / camo-netting or not, by adding a second (camouflaged) sniper kit in the same way, they are going to add the ironsights-equivalent of each kit. (Right or Left click on the kit selection commo-rose)

That video was pretty bad source to back up your info as most the "snipers" were DMR so wouldn't have ghillie suits either.

I know, hence the M14s etc. But it was easier to link to a youtube vid rather than posting dozens of IMG links to snipers

I would like the Left/Right click system. Left no ghilie, right ghilie.
And about the grass fading out, isnt there a new overgrowth system now, that is why I suggested this in the first place.
I often play in a really dedicated two man sniper team, sometimes I don't even fire a shot and I spend most of my time typing to the team any intelligence I gather. My top priority is staying invisible and If the 0.9 has this new additions and if ghilie could help me blend in, bring em on.

Staying still is your best bet to not getting spotted, people lock on to movement really easily (as well as muzzle flashes). But if the overgrowth system was implemented in every map you wouldn't really need the ghillie suit anyway since it would do a fairly good job of disguising you in the first place.
I'm still trying to decide whether snipers really have a role in PR, yes you get some snipers who give good intel. But I often find that when I play in a squad I call out as much intel to the team as possible anyway, and I see others doing the same. If you have a decent team you don't need a sniper, and when you haven't got a decent team, you want every man to be getting stuck in and not standing off at 600m wasting their time.
Anyway, I myself like sniping. I do like to see the enemies drop in front of me. But from a gameplay perspective they don't really add anything, aside from being quite a lot of fun, and being a nice break in games since they're not such a serious and intense gameplay role as being a squad member (We can't all be deadly serious all the time)

Proceed wrote:Well, i see no reason for snipers to wear ghillie suits on INS maps, as you already postet, it is not common on the battlefield, and makes no sence in urban warfare - but we have loads of maps where ghillie suits would propably be used - fools road for example .
I saw the end of the barrel and i was like, What is that?
Then my mind was blown.

I've trained with the US, Brits, Germans, French and even an ex NCO with the Selous Scouts. All of us use/used ghillie suits even if only carried in our packs. The whole idea of a ghillie is not to make one invisible (if that were ever possible) but to break up the outline of the shooter making their form harder to discern from their surroundings. Newer suits even have fake rocks, debris or other materials attached for better urban camouflage. The best are those the shooter tailers themselves for their immediate surroundings rather than the off-the-shelf gucci suits you see most often in movies.
The pics that everyone likes to flaunt as evidence that snipers no longer use ghillies are taken out of context. In those instances they are shooting from exposed, elevated positions. I can 100% guarantee that the threat of accurate return fire was nil otherwise they would have been in cover/concealment so do not base "your expertise" off of that.

That's very true. But are the snipers in PR representative of those snipers? Or more of soldiers who are on the move on the company/squad level?
