possible screen damage

hey we got a new tv recently a samsung 40 inch lcd.
today i decided to hook up my computer to it and play some pr. after mucking around to find a good resolution that i could read, i set the desktop resolution to 1280x800 @ 75hz refresh rate and same ingame.
it looked fine and there was no issue with the picture.
later when my dad turned on the tv to watch it the picture was ghosting and he started yelling because i had connected the computer to it.
after that i read the tv manual and it said the refresh rate should be set to 60hz.
by setting the refresh rate to 75hz have i damaged the tv? It shouldnt have shown if it was not supported..... right?
