[Texture] Snow

Hi guys, many (if not all) of you probably don’t know me. My name is Red Feniks, and I’m from Belgium (that’s really all there is to it ;) ). I’ve been playing the mod for quite some time now, and I enjoy it! One aspect of the game that keeps players playing is definitely the variety of factions and maps; woodland, urban, desert,…
Missing –> snow maps.
Yes, I’ve read the threads on snow maps that were introduced to the forums before (I’m thinking ‘Siberian Surise’, for instance).
A couple of problems seem to pop up with these kind of maps:
- To much texturing (both soldiers and vehicles)
- Plain white map = boring?
- Playing in a plain white map, being a plain white soldier = boring?
Now I had this idea, and feel free to break it down right after you read it, but don’t forget to mention why you dislike it ;) .
The thing is: a lot of players have been thinking about snow maps before, so why not try one out? I’m not thinking Antarctic landscapes, but I’m thinking semi-snow areas (eg: treetops covered in snow, grass areas opposing to snow areas, a bit of snow on the roofs,…) like a landscape right after winter, when the snow’s melting. Depending on the quantity of snow, this could make slight texture changes sufficient for realistic gameplay. ( as a matter of fact, texture changes might not even be nessecary (spelling?) if most of the snow was allready melted ;) )
We take another look at our three problems:
- Texturing: still a lot of work, if you're really planning to go for a true snow map, but little to no retexturing if you do a meltdown landscape.
- No plain white map, but a lot of variety instead = hell yeah!
- Playing in a non plain white map not being a plain white sold….. damn this sentence looks like sht… but y’all know what I mean ;)
I agree, this project would probably take a lot of work and time, but if there are people willing to work on it, I think it’s realizable.

Please let me know what you think of it. I’m not in need of a snow map, but I think it might be pleasant to have one in PR, I'm just curious to hear your pro's and contras. ;)

Greets,
Red Feniks

Thank's ;) I've scrolled through that one but I thought it wasn't active any more...
but seen that the last post dates from the day before yesterday I guess i'm wrong...
Sorry 'bout that, but still, if people are interested in answering on this thread, please do.
And to Zeno: you're doing one hell of a job, keep up the good work :)

This is the modding section, not really for suggestions. If you want to make this a project, then need to start some kind of work on it and show progress, and you'd be much more productive... as you said, its been suggested 100's of times before, reason why no one did it cause its alot of work, therefore, just suggesting again will mean it will prolly just end in the pile of 100s other times, unless you yourself put some time into it.

[R-DEV]Rhino wrote:textures is only scratching the surface, there is soo much more required to make snow maps, textures being the obvious thing as they are the thing you see being different, but under that you need new materials and thous new materials need new sounds for when your walking on snow, driving on snow, etc and the materials also need new effects for when your shooting snow etc. Then on top of that you really need to make a bunch of new statics and make variations of the current statics to make them look like they have snow on them etc. Then you can think about reskinning, and on that, your talking overgrowth, statics, terrain textures, road textures etc...

to put it simply, you would need to dedicated quite a few team members from many areas to get this thing to go, its not a map that looks white.

This has all been talked about in full before please use the search function on the forums...

@ Rhino: Well, I had used the search function, but only got about a page and a half results for the term 'snow'...
@ Fuzzhead: I don't have any problems with this entry ending up on the pile, because:
I would like to put time in this project, but apparently Zeno is allready developping a snow map, and he's doing a great job at it. So for now, I'm just gonna let him and whoever helps him do their job, and I hope the project comes out fine.
So, as a conclusion: when I wrote this entry, I wasn't aware of the fact that the snow map project was still active, I was trying to pump some new life into it, but hey, looks like that won't be neccesary :)

Well wish you luck, as Rhino mentioned, to get it complete, its alot of work... and by alot of work, I estimate at least double the time its taken Dr Rank to get Sangin to where its at now....

Would be cool as hell though of course! Especially for Russians/Canadians :)
