This is a noob question but, I've been using voip for a while on pr, but I hear people talking about mumble and teamspeak. What do these programs do, and how do I get/use them?

They are 3rd party VOIP applications you use at the same time as your game. in PR they are used to communicate with friends/other people who are not in your squad.

Both are good and have their uses

TS has great capabilities in admining and whispers between different channels. (e.g. if there is an air support channel you want to communicate with while in another channel) Otherwise when you speak everyone in your channel hears you.

Mumble is imo the better option, it allows you to either talk to people who are a few meters away from you ingame, or use the squad leader radio option if you are in teh SL channel. However Mumble is much harder to admin and has no whisper function. There is a PR specific mumble version around here. The best guide to set it up is http://www.realityteamwork.com/mumble

Teamspeak 3 is supposed to have the same capabilities as mumble

There is also ventrillo, but I didn't like that. though many use it.

To install TS - http://www.goteamspeak.com download and double click, follow on-screen instructions

to install Mumble https://www.realitymod.com/forum/f10-pr ... ality.html and http://www.realityteamwork.com/mumble download and double click as above.

Thanks for the answer, but how necessary is TS or Mumble? How many people use it? How easy is it to use? I assume I don't have to switch between BF2 and TS/Mumble.

Also, which version of TS should I download?

TS or mumble is mostly personal preference for each server.

A great many people join mumble these days, but its only really useful if either most of the server is on it or the key players (SL, pilots, drivers etc) are on it.

TS is in the same position but starts to suffer if too many people are on, and isn't as pub friendly- imo its more clan based than mumble.

Also you generally have to swtich TS servers for each PR server you go on, whereas Most PR servers have a channel on the PR mumble server, so you don't have to hunt for log in info over and over.

you only need the top download for TS, not sure what the updated executable does.

Neither are "necessary" but the ability to communicate with other squads without typing is clearly desirable. and with mumble, the ability to communicate with your Pilot/APC driver or blue ally next to you without having 32 other people hear your transmission is more desirable still.
