More particle effects.

I love this game to death, but something I don't like is that the world seems to static. I would love some more particle effects such as more smoke, flying debris from explosions, mud flying up from the ground etc.
In games such as the call of duty series, I really feel like I'm under attack in a caothic battefield, when debris and smoke flies over my head. I don't know how much is hardcoded, but some more concrete examples would be like;

Having dust and smoke from explosions stay in the air much longer, not just completly disappearing after 2 seconds. Maybe even travel with the wind a bit.

Have more chunks from the surrounding fly about during explosions and bullet hits. They don't have to be actual objects flying around, but part of the animation. I'm not really sure how that stuff works, but I hope you understand what I mean.

More dirt shooting up from the ground as bullets hit. Like when you lie prone behind cover, and your are taking fire, the bullets hitting in front of you shoots up dirt all over you. or just that the dust animation from the hits last maybe a second longer.

This is just something I have been missing from the game. I don't know how much is doable, but it would really enhance the experience for me.

This would make battles more caotic, harder to focuse, more challanging to move around, even more scary to get shot.

Having said that, +1. This will make PR step to a higher... uh... step? yeah

and this is said by a guy with HD2400 gfx card? ;)
i'm all for increasing dust, smoke and other fancy shizz, but i smell performance problems even on decent systems

They already last for 10-20 seconds.

Much could be done but performance problems aren´t the concern.

The in game particle limit is. Chances are you aren´t seeing the whole effect all the time, and if you have effects on anything but high you won´t see as much either.

Not to mention comparing the CoD series to PR is like comparing an iphone to a 55" HDTV. The size of the maps, number of statics and shear particles on the maps in PR dwarf those in the phonebooth sized maps of the CoD games. It's just that it's spread out a hell of a lot more. If you tried to create that density on the bf2 engine it would reduce pretty much any server to a crawl (also keep in mind that we're dealing with 64 players not 32). Apples and oranges my friend.

Yes I understand that there is a big difference in width compared to games like CoD. But as Battlefield 2 is a pretty old game, it shouldn't be to hard on people if you push it a little, performance wise. Take Arma 2 for instance, it has got really big maps aswell, and the amount of detail there is a pretty big step up.

And people who doesn't feel the need to upgrade, can still turn the effects off.
I don't know what that in game particle limit means. But it sounds like a pretty big dealbreaker.

Just because a processor is more powerful doesn't mean the engine can output more. Its a old engine that can only do so much. We've experienced more particles in testing and had big fps losses (hell some particles I'm making now bogged the game down).
