Do you have any discs in your optical drive?

Try disconnecting the optical drive and try again.


I get a prob like this when my optical drive refuses to read the disc that's in it lol.

No, always update software in my opinion, for the new software fixes bugs and exploits of the old. An un-updated copy of Windows XP that "works fine" is in fact a leaky virus magnet ready to explode.
