Project Reality 2142 [Discussion, not a suggestion/demand!]

Hey guys,
I suppose this still comes under 'Project Reality' and seeing as it's not a suggestion, I thought this would be the best place to put it; I'm hoping we can keep this thread as a discussion only without asking or pestering the very busy R-DEVs who already do a fantastic job with PR, to divert any resources to make this.
But, let's just talk about it.
When 2142 came out, I hadn't played PR; and as a result I loved it. But once PR came out, and even today (applicable to CoD for instance), I don't enjoy other FPS' as much as I used to because they seem too 'arcady', and I lost my love for 2142 (let alone my time for anything else haha).
It'd be nice to get that love back, and sometimes I've thought about this and even spoke to T&T buddies about it (who regurgitate the 'how can it be REALITY? It's in the future!' speech - Probably doombringer0 tbh, miserable Irish git!)
It doesn't have to be reality; I'm not
that stupid, but imagine 2142 with the elements that make PR great?
- New specialist kits rather than 4 'paint your own' basics.
- 'Realistic' spawn times; so that eliminating an enemy presence in an area will actually give you room to breathe.
- Proper spawn/asset system (longer spawn times for assets; no longer spawning on SLs, every flag you own, proper regulation/limitation of the squad beacon).
- Proper vehicle physics (anything as basic as requiring more than 1 person to operate certain vehicles; may be hard with the PAC hover tank, mind you...)
- AAS v2/3 - No more 'cap EVERYTHING' mentality
- Removal of most HUD to be much like PR.
How cool would that be? What else would 2142 need to make it a 'proper' war game to the standard of the PR we know and love?

No thanks, lets keep PR modern please. I cant stand Future games tbh and thats my opinion.

Maybe - but I think the poor DEV's, mappers, T ADM's etc etc have enough to do trying to keep PR updated, also with 2142 we would not need to have community factions neither kit changes to mirror RL.
Well at least on 2142PR we wouldn't have anything like : Oh noes the tandem RPG has six little wings not 4!

I think he's talking about a PR-style mini-mod for 2142, a different project that wouldn't impact on PR.
It's a nice idea but I doubt it would have a sustainable player base even if it was perfect. The Star Wars mod for 2142 (First Strike) received praise from the ModDB community but as far as I can tell no one plays it anymore.

Mad-Mike: Not talking about taking PR away from PR; what's the harm in more structured game play LIKE PR on other games though, for those that do enjoy them?
PLODD: As per the bulk of the original post, I'm not suggesting the DEV team touches this with a barge pole, it's just to discuss the application of PR gameplay to other games (specifically 2142 in this thread's case).
I imagine there'd be scope for community map and faction expansion.
2142 features the European Union and the Pan Asain Coalition; now I know there was a huge uproar in America that lots of people wouldn't buy the game because THEY weren't in it as a result of America being frozen over - But imagine the scope.
A second sub-war of independance? Splintered American armies of the EU break off to fight for independance once more across islands in the carribean that may still be hospitabile due to their equatorial location.
Also, an obvious one is the free peoples/rebels; resistance fighters who just want to live in peace and not become part of a larger 'nation'.
Small independant states also?

Yes definitively BF2142 (brought to modern times) would be better, since the engine, afaik, can do more stuff/has less stuff hardcoded.
However, though, this is Project Reality, and I have to agree, BF2142 is in da future.
Therefore, I don't think "Project Reality" would be the name.
BTW what you are "making a discussion" here is tecnically to make a different mod. AFAIK the DEVs are already busy with PR/PR2. But if they did a BF2142 mod, I might buy it...

Again, just discussing elements of PR applied to another game; not requesting anything from the DEV's can't underline that enough.
And yeah it wouldn't be called Project Reality for obvious reasons... What would it be called, though? =P

2142 has a much smaller playerbase than bf2 as a whole. However the engine does have a few nice upgrades over bf2, the real question is though is there really an audience for it?

I took 3 minutes longer to write my post, so after I posted you posted before me.

In fact every game would be enjoyable with those standards. But sadly most game developers only care about their money. That's why modifications are always the better choice. Of course there's always bad things in whatever game, but it comes down to the players.
Always the players.

sounds alright, and i appreciate how you feel, i used to love COD4 MP (playing HC with silenced G3 was so much fun) but after playing PR solidly going back was just horrible. never played 2142 though, the future didn't appeal to me
a game that i would like to see given the PR treatment is Joint Ops, i know its really old and not the nicest thing on the eyes but, it allowed up to 150 players, you could ram as much as you liked into vehicles, maps effectively went on forever. Only thing is the game mechanics are very arcadey and theres no form of real squad structure

Then why is this mod called "
reality mod"?

Lack of a better name I guess.
There is a difference between 'near-future' (BF2) and 'future' (BF2142) settings.
Whether BF2 accurately portrays the 'near-future' ("Wake Island 2007", MEC etc.) is another matter.

The only debatable aspect of this mod is the M.E.C. They may be fictional but have been deemed feasible and are based closely on modern day technology. Anything else in PR that is possibly seen as unrealistic is either there for game play reasons or the fact that PR isn't real life.
Hover tanks, lazer rifles and energy shields aren't based on any real research or current military equipment. The point is, anything could have gone into 2142 and nothing can be deemed unrealistic for that game as nobody can say what will be around in 2142.

Lol, I'm talking about deriving elements from a mod called Project Reality... Not trying to make 2142 'realistic'; just more feasible and like PR in terms of gameplay!

Chechens seizing a missile silo near Moscow (IIRC) isn't realistic.
The fact that Chechens are using scopes on their rifles is unrealistic.
Chechens using a Spandrel is not realistic.
PR IS set in the future, maybe I have not noticed and US along with Britain is waging a war against China.

All the kit ingame is currently in use and has known capabilities. The combat is supposed to be realistic, not the political situation that created the conflict.
Honest.

Don't forget the invasion of China.
Both are vanilla BF2 fantasies that PR has maintained.

- IIRC PR has no official timeline or story.
- Maps such as Fallujah and Basrah are based on past events.

No, Bob, sakils2 is correct. Maybe we should have the insurgency game mode and nothing else.
The problem is that the average Joe wants COD style play - Spawn, kill, die, spawn, kill, kill, die, spawn, die.
If 2142 had a big enough player base that wanted PR style game play, fair enough. I just assume that the average player that wants lazorz and hover tanks didn't really care about tactics and such.
