[?] Pro/Engineer??

Hi everyone

This might be a dumb question but I'm not into modelling and I would like to play around with it to see if it's something that can be learned.
I know most of you guys use 3dmax to do your modelling unfortunately I have no experinece with this program what so ever.

Since I'm studying as an engineer I have been given some education in 3D-modelling with Pro/Engineer which is usually used for 3D product designing (among many other stuff). I find it very easy to use it for the basic modelling but I'm not sure if textures are such an easy thing to work with in this program.

Basicly what I'm asking if there are someone out there that have experience with Pro/Engineer for this kind of purpose. Can it be done or is it just going to be a pain in the *** down the road?
It could be great if I could use this program because I can use it for free on my school and even get a free student edition.
Any thoughts??

[R-DEV]Rhino wrote:not really. CAD and Game Modelling simply dont mix. They work in pretty much the opposite way, trust me I know it took me a few years to get my head around changing my work flow to suit Game Modelling after I was pretty experienced with CAD and I tried all kinds of importing from CAD to Max, which the basic import aint hard but the huge problem is the model is not setup for games and would simply lag them to ****.

My best advice is to simply learn 3DsMax (or Gmax for the free option to learn on) and the BF2editor if you want to make stuff for BF2 (and Max for other games)
I have yet to use Pro Engineering wildfire but afaik its very simliar to Autodesk Inventor and Pro Desktop which I've used and are both dimension driven CAD programs.

Ok thanks for the reference. Too bad! Guess I have to look at this Gmax then...

Lol the the story about the models that would lag them self to **** made me think about the motobikes from 0.7 (or.75?) in quinling :-)

Hi again

I just downloaded gmax now and played around with it and some of the stuff looks familiar but alas it's not really the same.

I know there are alot of tutorials out there to get a beginner like me started but most of them seem to be about animating and weapon modelling. What I really want to do is play around with modelling buildings (what I really want to end up with is a hospital).
Could someone link me to a tutorial on how to make a building (a simple house structure would be fine to begin with where the basic tools are introduced. E.g. How does the alignment tool work). Sorry for asking but the amount of tutorials and guides just overwhelms me and none of them seem to be having what I'm looking for.

imo its become a bit of a joke by now but this is pretty much the "standard" how starting out with modeling and skinning for bf2 tut; its about making a bunker ; ).

It might be a joke for you but this is exactly what I was talking about so thank you for this :-)

Ok I'm sorry for spamming my own post, forgive me but I just found a nice tutorial that really explained alot of basic things to me in a very clear way. Furthermore it explains about the Boolean tool that can be used as a "cutting tool" by using another object. One of the most user friendly tools for basic model shaping in my opinion and if you know Pro/E you will find that it is very similar to the Extrude tool in Pro/E...
