I'm a relatively new member to PR (January 2009), but I was so taken with it that I left a clan I was with for 5 years because no one there wanted to play it (sure do miss you AOD). Been online gaming since 1999 (delta force 2), so I'm not new to the concept of team play. I don't recall ever seeing such a large, diverse, and dedicated group of players so committed to a such a great game like PR! It only encourages me to do more for the community I'm quickly endearing to, and finding myself wanting to contribute in some way.
I'm a life-long Health care professional by trade, not a modder or developer so the technical side of PR is all greek to me. But I do care about people, and I know that there is a real live person behind every screen-name. I also desperately would like to see PR thrive far beyond how it is currently enjoyed.
I've been through much of the realitymod forums and a some squadsite forums, and often see common themes. I'm NOT saying I have my finger on the pulse of the PR community, nor am I a social guru (maybe kinda inept at times, but not too bad), but one theme lately seems there is much concern over the welfare of PR, especially with posts concerning a decline in interest.

I think it would be interesting to see the leaders of our community to get together for realtime discussions about making some sort of concerted effort to develop the cultural/social norms of PR. I know it would be time comsuming at first, I'd wager there would be an immense amount of ideas and thoughts to sift through before any sort of productive discussion could commence.

It's just a rambling thought I've had lately. I haven't been able to find a similiar thread to something like this, and had to throw it out there.

Any thoughts...?

I am excited to see such a great post. I agree with you and I look forward to seeing what happens with this.

i like the idea, maybe we could ahve a large community event
we can have one for each country lets say, some may need mroe than one go at this because mroe people play from one country than another, also maybe the time poeple have been playing like new guys and old guy to be seperated
anyway we should all get together on TS or mumble or other 3rd party chat room thingy that alows speach and have a kind of conferance meeting between DEV's, then one between DEV's and players and then one between DEV's again to discuss ideas this could be repeated multiple times and even become a monthly meeting xD

Heheh, but seriously, this is worth looking into. Putting real life faces to internet names only helps the community. The anonymity of the internet can really bring out either the worst in people, or the part that doesn't care about consequences and common decency. Not saying that this is running rampant on the forums, but you see it in ALL online games. People hacking and just being tards because they dont know the people whos game they are ruining

I need to think on this some more, I have ideas, but I would love to know what our [R-DEV] and [R-CON] leaders think. I play mostly at night, so it is rare that I have a chance to interact with them. I am sure that the last thing an admin wants to do is kick players off his server. Sometimes it's because the kicked player is a plain old azhat, that's just the nature of gaming. Sometimes I think it's because of the rules differences between the servers. And then there's the vBF2 mindset new players bring with them, and maybe that's the root cause of so much friction between peeps, sometimes on the SAME team. Sometimes folks on the same team spend as much energy working against each other, as working towards to intended objective(s).

Perhaps the answer could be as simple/radical as standardizing server rules. Or that players from established servers have set times or dedicated players whose goal would be to spend a round or two with a new player(s) and explain what the game is about or what the "social norms and expectations" are. There could be a "Commander's night", where folks who play on that server MUST follow the commander's orders (that would be the EXPECTED behavior from all players that night). Would there be a way to imbibe the 9 principles of war or "Infantry Basic Tactics" quick reference chart into a "How to" guide to playing PR? There's so many ways to approach this, but it would greatly depend on what the community leaders think and feel.

All I know for sure is that PROJECT REALITY IS NOT BF2, it's PR. I know I enjoy PR alot more when I play with folks who play PR like it was intended(or at least my idea of it).

I would love to be a fly on the wall of the meeting, if our PR leaders did meet and talk about things like that! It appears that Okita is thinking along the same lines I am.

Well, the British Devs are the founders/current rulers (yep) of the community. They have established the British Forces as the main faction (lol wut).

So I suggest, REVOLT. Relocate the Brits to the US and have them turn into Americans! These ideas are probobly gonna get be taken by the black helicopters soon enough.

Would just like to input, my clan have had numerous real life meetings (mainly airsofting) and its defiantly better for the clan. Tho for such a lager community like this it will be abit harder of course.

Brits are popular as a faction and with the player base as there are hardly if any other games where the British forces get represented. It was the first non-vanilla faction to be implemented also (thus having the longest time to be established/most work put into.)

Potentially, but you'll have a hard time getting everyone to do so. Especially the major 'troublemakers' who strive on their anonymity.

I'd really love to hear what Requiem and Evilhomer have to say about all this. PR has progressed quite far from this post.

It would be unrealistic to expect an immediate, magor cultural shift in whatever direction the community desires. It appears all these posts may be raising larger questions...

1. Does the PR community feel that things are going well, as they are?

2. Are there aspects of the culture ( the attitudes and behavior that are characteristic of a particular social group or organization) of our community that would benefit from change?

3. (This may be the biggest question of all) Do we, as a unique community, desire change enough to implement the process for the desired changes?

PR's greatest resource is it's members. There will be as many opinions as there are members. I'm thinking there are many new threads possible from this subject, and it will be very easy to get lost and lose focus. IMO, there are 3 kinds of PR players...
A) Players that love the gritty action, have strategical patience, enjoy the sense of teamwork, are tacticians, and have the discipline to learn more... and apply what they learn.
B) Players that are new to the PR concept, lack the knowlege or understanding of the basics of PR, and have a limited understanding of what their teammates' expectations are.
C)Players that just don't care, they just wanna do whatever they want to do, without any forethought or feeling on what the potential or real impact they are having on the game.

One doesn't need any attention, one could use some coaching/encouragement, and one you can do very little about.

Time for another thread or two?

Ah well, page 4 in less than a week. It was exciting while it lasted. This is a new idea, and there would be much hard work behind it. I only hope it may have planted a few seeds for thought. Maybe we'll see something on this in the future?
