Kits & Roles: Changes over time

While playing this mod off and on from .6 onwards I've noticed a few changes to kits to make them more appropriate to their respective roles in a squad and on the team. I guess what I want to discuss is.
1.) What are the roles each team or squad should have?
2.) Are there kits or combinations of play styles that fulfill each of the roles?
3.) What can/should be done to existing kits or other rules to ensure that these roles can be covered?
4.) How have the different versions of PR created the need for different roles and how have older roles been tweaked or eliminated to insure that these have been fulfilled.
Here is an example of what I am talking about.
Kit: Rifleman
Role: Defeating enemy infantry and ammo resupply
-Some changes in this kit have been a reduction in the ammo boxes so they cannot rearm themselves (which I agree was a good change), however this makes their use as an ammo resupply soldier less reliable and more as an emergency resort. I think it should be this way as it encourages the formation of other roles such as ammo resupply and logistics while also promoting reality as ammo boxes can no longer resupply more ammo boxes.
-The above change by tweaking the ammunition carried formed the possibility of more roles to be offered to the team and therefore changed the way battle ideally would be fought on this game.
-Other changes have been the inclusion of a scoped and unscoped version to offer different choices for players to utilize depending upon the map and play style of the player and the requirements of the squad.
-In a previous version the iron sight rifleman had ammo while the scoped did not, did this change the role of the rifleman kit, or in the newer versions of PR have the roles changed?
This post is mainly to re-examine some of the ideas regarding roles both on a team and in a squad and to discuss how these changes have affected game-play and the game in general over the years. Oftentimes with new releases and with other game play enhancements roles change or become more or less important. (example: combat engineers - by removing their repair option and creating a repair depot they became less useful to the armor crews on the team, by allowing firebases to be knifed instead of demolished with explosives their C4 became less useful, and the special operations kit also arguably no longer needed to exist for asset demolitions and was replaced with the combat engineer and a specialist became the new spawn kit. A bit of an oversimplification but I think you probably understand what I mean)
What do people think about that? Should it continue? Is this type of phasing out and replacing kits and switching roles more or less inevitable as a mod develops? Multiple kits can perform the same roles why is it that some kits are kept while others are retired or made limited?
I find this type of discussion fascinating as a mod develops especially one as active as this one. Let me know what you think about how the game changes and new aspects are included affect the roles each team or squad is now responsible to cover and are the current kits adequate to perform these roles? Should some be returned?
