Important FPS drops, need help.

Drop in FPS when ever I play a video game.
Now, I'm not a computer person. I don't understand most of it, and help building my rig up. (Which admittedly is in need of an upgrade or two)
Today, I was playing PR fine on the UKWF server, perfect FPS and everything running smoothly.
I go for dinner, then I log back on and go for another round on PR. I can't, it took 10 minutes to load up a training server, once I was in the server, it was unplayable. FPS was so low.
I'm assuming this is to do with with RAM, but I have 2 gigs of RAM and haven't had such a problem until this evening.
Please help

did you check to make sure a virus scan or something hadn't started in the background?

What steps have you taken to troubleshoot already?

Yes, they're all turned off. I run Game Booster to turn most unwanted processes off.

So far, i've ran an AVG scan, deleted some programes never used and rebooted. Made sure that there's no processes after turning games booster on.
No success, it just clicked in my mind that i may have an out of date display driver, so I'm just about to update that.

I think I may have found my problem.

One of your graphic cards? Then you're running SLI or /Crossfire?

Yeah, I bought the PC 2nd hand about half a year ago. I'm running two nVidia GeForce 7800 GTX's, I would only run one, but I'm using an ASUS A8N SLi Deluxe motherboard, assuming the SLi deluxe means it's only for SLi.
I updated the drivers, and rebooted. But my PC started up in safe mode, so I instantly knew this was the drivers which caused the safe mode. So I roll backed the drivers, but I had noticed the exclamation mark on one of the cards were still there. Any way, I roll backed the drivers on both cards and re-booted, it started up fine.
I started PRSP and tried again, but still long loading times, and virtually no FPS.
Last night I uninstalled loads of unused programs, and ran a disc clean up, but I don't think it has done anything.
I have 1024mb of RAM DDR I believe, I did have 2gb but when I took my PC for a clean up a few months ago, the shop said one of the sticks was causing problems, I didn't have the money at the time to upgrade, since I paid my HDD to be reformatted and drivers reinstalled.
Now, I know my RAM would play a huge role in how much FPS I get, my PC is perfectly fine to play BF2 and PR for that matter.
This is my spec for you guys if you could shoot me some possible solutions
Motherboard : ASUS A8N SLi Deluxe
CPU: AMD Athlon 64x dual processor @ 2.4ghz
RAM: Corsair 1024mb DDR? I don't know which DDR i think it's just DDR
HDD: SATA 250gb
GPU: X2 nVidia GeForce 7800 GTXs 256mb
OS: XP SP3
Any help at all is very much appreciated.
Dylan.
