[Model] Rapier [WIP]

Hello!

I am brand new to the PR community, hearing about it through a friend of a friend. I am currently in my 2nd year of a Computer Game Technology course at Portsmouth university. I am by no means an expert modeller, but I am attempting to make a model of a Rapier. I feel like its quite a mammoth challenge, but from past experience you learn a lot on the way when you test yourself to the max ;)

I have no knowledge of texturing or creating models specifically for importing into games, simply because I have not been taught it yet, but I figured I'll learn a lot and this community seems to be a great source of knowledge :p . Either way I'll (hopefully) have something to put in my portfolio by the end of it so its a win/win situation.

My previous work consists of simply University projects which I have submitted for assessment:

And a (poorly) animated video:

Minigun made out of boredom:

Now you have a scope of the kind of level I am at, here is what I am trying to make:

It would be awesome if it was of appropriate quality to actually be used in PR, which is very ambitious I know.

As of yet I really don't have much to show so far. I am finding it pretty difficult, mainly due to not being able to get proper reference images of all sides of it. But anywho here's what I have done (note its only half of the "trailer" as I intend to use the symmetry modifier):

I intend to keep this updated often, to show my progress and get some criticism.

Cheers

Sparky

cool, here's some more refs, keep in mind that it comes in 2 parts, the missile system and the radar system, like this first pic shows :)

There is also a funny old version that looks something like this that you need to watch out for, dunno if the old version also has a different radar but something you need to keep an eye out for when looking for refs and looking though them etc. Basically if something is contradicting, its probably because its a different version and if your unsure best thing is to post here about it.

This might be the old radar but can't quite tell, mainly going by the trailer bit looks different but can't quite tell tbh.

Well Rhino, he certainly doesn't have a lack of ref images now.

But I wonder, how would such a static anti-everything-that-flies system work in PR? Especially since it works with a seperate radar?

Thats wicked, cheers rhino. It's annoying they put that camo foliage netting on it so you can't see the "trailer" properly. Gonna try and model some more today but have an exam tomorrow so I should probably focus on that.

Cheers!

I could work like the missile system in Bf 1942 Desert Combat. I did not find a video reference though.

Anyways I think it will be overpowered. After a short time there will be people killing everything with it over half the map if it will do that much damage.

it could be a commander asset that's only active if he selects the screen as like the UAV. so he has to make a choice if hes on the mini map and/or UAV then the radar system isn't active thus making the radar unit vulnerable to attack.

as well, armor and ground forces would be able to neutralize it?
or maybe only allow 3 or 4 deployments of it or one every 30 mins?,

or even make it forever to repair like a bridge or something ?

i dunno . I like it though

Hey guys,

Been trying to do a little bit of work on this today but, its proving tough. Is starting with the trailer the best place to start? Like I said I have never made a model to be imported into a game, but can I do all the detailing with floating geometry? Currently doing abit of the large mudflap thing.

Cheers

All I cna say is - if this eventually gets put in game (or even if it doesn't) - I LOVE YOU :D

The rapier is awesome ;)

I think that if it's severely limited - and if the missiles go slower than they do IRL (to give the pilot a chance to drop flares and/or get out of there) then it won't be that over balanced.

I would defiantly start with the trailer yes since once its the base of the object and the rest fits onto it but also because the radar and missile unit spear to use pretty much the same trailer, if its not excatly the same its pretty close so once you have made the base you can clone it to be used for the radar as well.

So basically once you have got the trailer sussed everything should fall into place :)

When I saw the title of this thread, I thought PR was going into a whole new level of close quarter combat.

Nevertheless, those are some nicely done models.
