These have been considered, yes. However, just to point out, the ACOG 4x telescopic sight is not the same as a close-combat reflex (aka "red dot") sight. The issue sight for that purpose is the M68 Close-Combat Optic, which is pictured in a few of the photos you posted (and found on the M4A1 in BF2). There also seems to be a commercially available reflex site on one of the M16s pictured. Perhaps the Marine purchased it himself.

Also, the ACOG 4x sight is in short supply and a highly desired item. In the SOPMOD kits for the M4A1 purchased by USSOCOM, there is only one ACOG 4x site per four weapons. In regular infantry units, even fewer are available. The Marines have been experimenting with the squad designated marksman concept in Afghanistan and Iraq, equipping one rifleman in each squad with an M16A4 with a Harris bipod and an ACOG 4x. With regard to the scope they pretty much said "We love it, please send more."

Sorry to say, the puppy is not official issue and likely will not be in Project Reality.

It's difficult to tell because the scope is in the Marine's shadow, but since it doesn't look as cone-shaped as the ACOG, I would say its an M68 or a privately purchased scope.

On second thought, that could be an ACOG 4x site. Here's an M68, and it's shorter.

"The M68, close-combat optic (CCO) is a reflex (nontelescopic) sight (Figure 2-23). It uses a red dot aiming point and is designed for the "two-eyes-open" method of sighting. The M68 can be shot with one eye open as well. The dot follows the horizontal and vertical movement of the gunner's eye while remaining fixed on the target. A one-time retightening of the torque-limiting knob is recommended after the first three rounds are fired to fully seat the M68. No centering or focusing is required beyond 50 meters."

No, the red dot sight (M6 8) will be included, it's already in BF2 on the M4A1.

Maybe they just know how to grease the supply chain or have purchased their own scopes commercially, but last I had heard, they were in short supply and highly desired.

As for better quality, they're two different types of optics used for different things, so you can't really compare them in that regard.

I have done some digging and have found out that the Trijicon ACOG is available commercially. A Marine's father bought one for his son before he deployed, and the scope ended up catching a bullet and saving his life.

For M16A4s having the M68 or ACOG in the game, we haven't made a decision yet. I'd like to see them, sure.

The Marines do plan on having at least 250 ACOGs per battalion (expected date was by Summer 2004, but no follow-up story to confirm, and the supply chain moves slowly when it comes to new gear), so they do expect it to be much more common, if not the most common weapon/sight combination for Marine riflemen.

Thanks, BB! I guess it's time for me to either go see the eye doctor or learn how to enhance photographs.

Well, I found it on the Marines' website, so I don't think they would bother to write the article if he were Army. ;)

And keep in mind, not every Marine has an M16A4. This Marine was not assigned to an infantry battalion, he's a Sgt in a Civil Affairs Group.

Maybe the ACOG could be the unlockable for a class. Maybe it could be coded so that you spawn with a random weapon for that class. Maybe you'll spawn with a standard M16A4 with no accessories, then a 1 in 3 chance of spawning with an M68, and a 1 in 3 chance of spawning with an ACOG, or something along those lines

The puppy should be an unlockable. And you can train it to bite the terrorists! :D

On second thought, that appears to be an ITL MARS reflex sight.
