Project Reality .9 Review

Here is my review of Project Reality 0.9:

I have been playing PR since .8, thats about a year and a half. When I first downloaded the mod I though, "Wow, this is so new to me and so awesome I might never get used to this mod!" However, after about 2 months I left the training grounds and joined my first official server and had loads of fun. I even had some mates join me in the battle, those .85 times were the best.

Alright, that was about 6 months to a year ago. We are all wondering, "Is PR 0.9 going to live up to all of its hype and expectations?" I am about to answer that question.

The first map I played was Silent Eagle. I was really excited because it was 3pm in london after school and I couldn't wait to get started. The first thing I did was made a jet squad because nobody else had and waited for the F-16 to spawn. Once it did, I hopped in it and powered up down the runway. Boom, I exploded. Why? It was an abandoned airfield, so because it was "abandoned"... well not anymore anway, there had to be trees on the sides of the runway right? Boy, the creator of Silent Eagle must have had a blast creating this map and saying, "Hey, I'm going to put trees on the side of the runway because this mod is based on realism and this is such a great idea!" Wrong. Putting trees right beside the runway will endanger your plane of being CLIPPED while taking off from overhanging tree branches. Was it really necessary? Whats next... the tanks. I got an incendiary thrown at me and my tank blew up. I think I remember you DEVs saying something about increasing the power about incendiaries. You guys were doing beta testing werent you pre-release? Looks like you havent found everything. Well thats alright since before Friday the 5th, you guys were fixing bugs and updating the maps. On the PR 0.9 5th highlights reel, there was a guy in the commander seat with his head on the desk... I guess thats similar to how you were "fixing bugs" and "tweaking the maps."
4/10

Alright, next map is Yamalia. This one had the Canadian Forces and I was really excited when I got to tag an LAV-III and be the gunner of it. The gameplay was merely ruined by my computer lagging every time I zoomed in because there are trees everywhere. Despite all this, the chinook adds to be a great helicopter and it's really fun even though you can't see where you are landing without a move marker. Well, I guess that's alright too. The vehicle warfare of Yamalia, however, turned out to be really fun! I loved driving the Leopard 2A6 my favourite tank and truly one of the best in the world! I don't understand the MG42 on top though as wouldn't have the Canadians removed it and added one of their 5.56/7.62mm standard machine gun on top? I don't really know if they do, so I'll leave that alone. 8/10

Next map: Dragon Fly

The name is as boring as the map itself. I was a militia or a rebel or whatever faction was on there. I wasnt sure where the T-62 spawned so I figured the road since they're big machines and what other point of a tank being on a road. I was right, hopped in the tank and drove off. My gunner and I killed a challenger which really made no sense, a tank that is 40+ years old using 40+ year old ammunition against a state of the art tank built to withstand anything that is used against it. Only one or two challenger tanks were ever lost in battle, one of them surviving 20 RPG hits and a Milan missile. This one died from 3 shots from a T-62 and you guys are based on realism... that makes sense. The dull atmosphere really adds to a boring game. 3/10

Next Map: Fallujah West

I'm only really reviewing new maps but this map was succeeded in updates and everything there was new to me. First, the new M1A1. I was pleased to see it was a USI model, thats another great modification and I'm really anticipating .2 and the new B-52. The first thing I noticed while gunning in the M1A1 was when I zoomed in, what happened? Lag. The first time I played Fallujah West I think my game started crashing because of all the houses, but I found a fix for it and never crashed on it again, the .85 and .87 turned out to be loads of fun. .86 was a failed version of Fallujah and the RPGs landing next to every troop harmlessly really turned down the fun factor, and the M2A2 exploding from one shot of an RPG. Well anyway, the lag is a turn off for gameplay but I do like the new bomb truck model, I got killed from it in a HMMWV being 50 metres away, which is alright I guess because there are 2 aircraft bombs located in the back, a big improvement rather than having a scary red truck with a single Mk-82 attached to the coupling, I will miss that truck. I didn't play everything on this map but other than the laggyness, everything is alright, the mainbase whoring was turned down a lot and I was pleased with an undisrupted mainbase. 7/10 (.85, .87 would be rated 8.5/10)

Next map: Gaza and Beirut

The Merkava tank... just saying the name truly brought fear to a player. But up close and personal, it turned out to be one of the most failed armored vehicles in project reality. One regular RPG hit and an IED blows up a Merkava. Yeah that was fun, driving the tank until I dont get to do anything in it. There is no point of having a tank on that map when the entire 1KM map is a city and if you even enter the city with the tank (I'm talking about Gaza btw) you are dead. Beirut, the map was alright, the BTR-80's were pretty cool but having a helicopter that can access any building could lead to some problems with guys shooting you all the time and the inability to climb that building without a rope, IF you even did manage to get up there you would immediately get shot. The only thing that can kill the Merkava on Beirut is the tow missile. The BTR-80 is not fair against a heavily armored machine, it has tow missiles for christ's sake and you're making APC's with 14.5mm round against armor that could be lets say 6 inches thick? You've got to be kidding me. Gaza 3.5/10 Beirut 6/10

I didnt play that much of Lashkar valley but already I could assume the map would be like Korengal which I loved and the hilltops with snipers could increase to the playability and fun of the map, though driving in the APCs are quite boring if you ask me.
7/10 for the 2 rounds I played on it

I know there are 1 or 2 maps I havent mentioned, I haven't gotten a chance to play them yet. When I do, the first thing I will do is post what I think. Overall, the new maps added to PR can really be really dull or really exciting. I dont like the new deviation as the old method of shooting was more fair, added to the challenge and was less vanilla like. Here's my overall rating:

Project Reality 0.9: 5.5/10

That is all

*booo hiss*
It's been out for <48hours. Give it some time dude.

Aside from the performance issues (which are being sorted apparently, you can help by reporting them along with your system specs), PR 0.9 is an easy 10.

Interesting that it took less than 48 hours since the game was released to come out with a review. Seriously, first impressions are not always accurate to the overall quality of the mod. Which is why I am reserving my judgements for this till at the very least a good week of play.

There's a reason why the feedback suggestion is closed. We are looking from feedback, yes, but from when people have had time to play the game.
