CTD's versus working 0.9 installations

I am as one of the CTD gang am wondering why some players with basic computers can play OK, maybe with lag on Jamalia, Iron Ridge and Dragon fly but they can still play.
Others such as myself who have capable machines (2.6 9600GT 4GB) get constant CTDs, I can't play VBF or even good old Muttrah anymore.
Why is it seemingly Random?
Can where we downloaded 0.9 from have any effect?
I for example used Vuse for torrent DL of 0.9, my 1.5 patch from ID3, and I am reloading tonight, although rather stupidly I am using Vuse again.
My VBF is the classic version with all the packs included (SF,EF and AF)
I am far from a computer expert I am just wondering if there is a common link amongst the CTD gang. Fine that some maps are bugged, it's a mod it happens, but the randomness amazes me. Could it not be interesting to add where your VBF, 1.5 patch or 0.9 DL came from on the problems template?
Next step will be fresh DOS install with windows 7 although the CTD gang does have it's share of 7's, XPers and Vista's.
Just a thought guys, trying to apply my logic, which may well not be applicable to the joys of microsoft....
Please if this suggestion is ridiculous don't be to hard on me, but I am in PR withdrawl I have to talk to my wife now....

I absolutely understand you. there is nothing more frustrating when speaking about playing games then having a solid pc and not to be able to play normally.
I share your frustration with you since Iam also one of those who gets ctd and dunno why

- did everything possible to fix it but no no no still ctd.
hope the thing get better,
j.

Couple of things I found on my ancient PC that stopped teh CTDing were, upping virtual memory to 6gb 3gb on each HD, and turning off Avast's standard sheild which is the one that constantly scans the HD's for nasty things.
I still get lag and shite FPS (sometimes it turns to Seconds Per Frame!) sometimes, but at least I can play for more than 45mins without a CTD, in fact it hasnt done one since I did those 2 things.
Which reminds me, must go do one of them performance report thingies.

I was having random CTD's that I thought was an issue with PR alone. I reinstalled everything and it was fixed.
I'd recommend completely uninstalling PR + BF2. Then install BF2, the BF2 patches, PR part 1+2, then see if your problem has gone.
It may be worth running a defrag after uninstalling.

Oh yeah, I uninstalled PR .87, defragged, installed .9, then defragged again.
That probably helped as well.
CTD issues solved for me

I was getting mega CTD's before (with VBF too), but after a careful reload 0.9 works very well so far (all gfx on medium, AAX2 in game setting with 1850X1250 resolution).
I have a portable with a partioned drive C being OS 40Gb and D Data @ 240Gb, 8600mGT, Duo 2 core @2.4.
I uninstalled: PR, VBF, 1.5, X fire, Fraps, TS, Mumble, game spy, PB
I reinstalled being careful to put VBF, PR and Mumble in the correct place on D.
I ensured I deleted my torrent and the stored torrent PR DL which were on C (I had left it seeding once which ofc gave me big lag).
I increased my pagefile/virtual memory to 6000mb on C.
I defragged C when all was installed and working.
I re DL'ed 1.5 and 0.9 to eliminate a corrupted DL from the list of possible problems.
Before reinstall my C had only 4 or 5 GB free, now however it has 12 GB free.
I have not reinstalled X Fire,TS or Fraps where I am perhaps overly concerned about space and conflicts.
When reinstalling I thoroughly checked VBF would run on all full gfx with 8AA, it did fine.
I have only played one round on Iron Ridge so far, but an RT admin and Beta tester Snoogums has found some interesting settings to try on the video card, so after testing how it is now I will try those later - to compare and help his research.
But as you can see all I have basically done is just reinstall correctly making sure my C has lots of space, my D has over 200Gb free too. The only setting I have tweaked is my pagefile/virtual memory (to 6000mb on C) and as PR will only ever use 2Gb of ram where I showed 3.3GB avaialble before changing it that shouldn't of changed anything....
It that helps anyone I'll be happy, it's worth the few days work and testing so far - I find 0.9 sublime, my first few minutes two kills as medic heehee!

PLODDITHANLEY's original thread
Merge pl0x?
Also, this may help others looking through the r-tec sections.
EDIT: Nice one.

i used Gamebooster(
Game Booster | Faster Play, Free Download | Free Game Accelerator Download) to defrag bf2, after that all my CTD problems were gone

Weirdly, I tend to now only crash to desktop when running my textures on high, I either crash on checking files after loading, or about 2-5 minutes after joining the game itself. Everything else are problems that correspond to everyone else. Didn't have this issue in 0.874, as I ran everything high, highest resolution, AAx2.

I was getting CTDs between rounds even with my settings at low, then I uninstalled everything including vanilla, updated my drivers and reinstalled everything. Played 3 hours last night with no crashes of any sort.
