May RAM Increase Make Sense?

I have some advise guys.

I upgraded my computer only two months ago only to play PR. And it worth every penny sent 8-)

My System Specifications
  • Operating System :Windows 7 (64-bit)
  • CPU : Intel Core 2 Quad 2.83 GHz
  • Graphics Card :NVidia GeForce 9800 GT
  • Amount of RAM : 4 GB
  • Sound Card :O n Borad
I'm playing with 1650 x 1050 resolution and every setting on High which is all ok with the 0.9 performance. The only significant problems are:
  • Low FPS issues on some maps' specific locations. (Especially in Forests)
  • Sometimes abnormality on ground graphics while flying
  • Having difficulty to find/locate INS caches.
OK here is my question. I already spent my money for an upgrade. Only thing I can upgrade right now is my ram. Do you think rising my current 4 GB RAM to 8 GB will make significant effect on my game performance?

Thank You!

Yes and no. More RAM will fix some crash issues at map change, but it will have absolutely no effect on framerate (FPS) or picture quality.

[*]Low FPS issues on some maps' specific locations. (Especially in Forests)
2 GB to 4 GB is a significant improvement for many computers. 4GB to 8GB I dont know about so someone else has to fill that in.

[*]Sometimes abnormality on ground graphics while flying
I think this is an engine issue and that more RAM wont help.

[*]Having difficulty to find/locate INS caches.
You wont find more caches if you got more RAM. Or did I misunderstood you?

I don't think BF2 can use more then 4gig of RAM..but I could be wrong

More RAM will help all the apps running on one machine.

That really depends on how much of his RAM is being used and what GFX settings he is playing at. If not all of his 4gbs is being used (which is most likley unless he has other big programs running in the bg) then ye, it will not make much difference to FPS etc.
[R-DEV]ZZEZ wrote:I don't think BF2 can use more then 4gig of RAM..but I could be wrong
No it can't BUT like clueless said, other apps being able to use the memory can make sure that BF2 or w/e other program is running can get the full 4gbs if it needs.

I currently have 6gbs of RAM, mainly because of all the modding work I do, running 3DsMax, Photoshop and the BF2 editor all at the same time, I really need the RAM to ensure for smooth running and no crashes (thou the BF2 editor can still sometimes be bitchy as always, just not soo much about memory now :D ) and lightmapping uses shit loads of RAM, epically when doing it in Max with a full map being loaded hehe.
I would btw be using 8gbs if one of my RAM sockets on my MB didn't fry :p

But for just gaming alone, 4gb should really be sufficient for most games but upgrading RAM can not hurt (unless its really, really shitty ram :p )

As I said I'm playing everything on high (accept AA off) with the max. wide screen resolution I can (1650 x 1050). And never have any app. working on the background. I close everything before starting game.

So..under those circumstances I guess no need to double my RAM.

Thank you everyone! :)

Its important to remember that windows flags applications on whether or not they can handle any addresses > 2 Gig.
If you wanna use a larger amount, you need to edit the BF2.exe.
You can use a program called CFF Explorer (i think thats what its called) to set the flag. After that, the game works better if you got a lot of ram.

Also, more RAM is alway a good idea, I got 6 gig and it works great as I can have alot running simultaneously.

Same GPU here but less RAM!
I got 2GB on Windows 7 with Core 2 Duo E8400 3GHz
anyway... I start playing with 86 FPS... after 2-4 hours My FPS drop to 15 (Not instantly) and after that I crash to desktop...
I thought its an overheating issue in my GPU... but no...
its not!
So for me its a RAM issue as my RAM is running at 400.3MHz only
I am not sure if its a RAM issue for you too...

I have twelve gigs of Hyperx 1600MHz ram in my rig. The extra ram helps FPS to ceratin extent. After that, the ram helps with multiple programs running at one time. The videocard GDDR is a good indicator of power. The mroe GDDR and faster processing speed you have on the video card will make the most noticable difference in the video quality.

I7 350 OC 3.7Ghz
12GB Kingston Hyperx ram (1600MHz)
2x ATI Radeon 5870 (Crossfire)
128 SSD
500GB HDD
2x 22" LCD Monitors

DDR2 800 runs at 400mhz internally but works as 800mhz memory in action. DDR3 is same, DDR3 800 would run 200mhz internally. And if you have 2gb, yes might have something to do with lack of fps in some places, I would recommend you get the 4gb.

If you wanna use a larger amount, you need to edit the BF2.exe.
If I'm not mistaken, the BF2 1.5 Patch fixed that so you don't need to manually edit the exe anymore.

I actually needed to ask this. I frequently crash on map change, and have slow map loadings.
My computer is kind of old, so I need to upgrade to like...4GB
