Losing key binding in vanilla

Hello.

hopefully this is the right place and hasn't been addressed before as I attempted a search and came up with nothing that I was looking for (unless I was searching for the wrong terms)...

I seem to keep "losing" my "create squad" bind (default = Insert) in vanilla BF2 after any time I've loaded PR. FWIW it disappears in PR as well (which I don't mind as much given the difference in game play...as so, I figure it to have been a "feature" implemented with the new release to force better focus on squad creation).

I play PR with a different profile than my vanilla profile, and have even tried setting my vanilla profile's control.con as read-only, to no avail...it still gets overwritten with the "missing" create-squad bind (Insert). I've also noticed that control.con gets overwritten in the same manner with any/all other profiles in my bf2 directory. So as a result I end up having to copy a backup control.con back into my vanilla profile when i go to play that. I know, I can still create a squad the "long" way, so its not a critical issue, its just an annoyance, especially when I'm so accustomed to doing it the "instant" way for so many years.

again, apologies if this is in the wrong place and/or it has already been addressed...I was unable to find anything with the means/manner in which i searched.

thanks.

i am not aware of that problem having been addressed before
you did already what i would suggest (seperate profiles)

can you bind it to a different key? does it get overwritten still?
did you try using BF2Cleaner yet/delete whole "My Documents\Battlefield 2"-folder? maybe it can fix up some corrupted files

might even be a bug in pr if bf2cleaner cant fix it - i'd just say go ahead and post it as a bug (gonna be very low priority though, i guess ;) )

fyi: i remember there was a bf2 bug where all keys got unbound but that doesnt really seem to fit here

hello. thanks for reply.

no dice, unless I did something wrong.

deleted the whole mydocs/bf2 folder, re-retrieved my profiles, set them all back up to how they were, loaded vanilla in both and Insert (create squad hotkey) worked as before...loaded up PR, made sure all that ran fine, loaded vanilla back up and Insert is unbound again :-(

again, its not critical, just an annoyance after using Insert for so many years :-P I don't even know where I would rebind it if so, plus I don't think there is a key assignment for it in Options>controls, so it would have to be a manual control.con edit to do that.

I did grab bf2cleaner, but it looked like it didn't do anything 'cleansing-wise' that deleting the bf2 folder already took care of, so I didn't really run that except to mirror the profiles for key bindings.

so summary/problem:

loading PR unbinds the "create squad" hotkey (default=Insert) for other (non-PR) game profiles w/in MyDocs/BF2. as far as I know, this is the only key that this happens to, and I have not tried manually rebinding to a different key to see if its goes after the key or the command.

thanks.

i dont have pr/bf2 available to check right now but it would be interresting if someone else could check if it happens for him to - and whether it is limited to a certain os

i came to think of that it might be the default profile that gets fiddled with by pr - if so you could try to lock it ("default\control.con") with write protection/read-only (don't know if you haven't already tried exactly this) and see if unbinding still happens (i don't think pr will like it though - might crash)

as found/pointed out by a fellow player (which confirms my lack of proper search terms/methods  ;-) ), this is a newly implemented "feature/fix/workaround" that unfortunately the manner in which it is initiated removes the bind across the board... :-?

relavent thread

:-(

thanks again.
