I would HIGHLY suggest that you build your own computer.

You will ALWAYS get more performance for your dollar.

For $850 you can make a really nice system that will crush that one.

I will gladly help you pick out the parts.

When I was looking to build a new computer these websites I found to be the best price wise. Cyberpower PC lets you customize it and they build it for you. The other two are just part shops, but you can buy prebuilt systems from them as well. For some reason TigerDirect has no sales tax which is a plus. Just throwing these out there in case you didn't know about them.
CyberPower Inc. - UNLEASH THE POWER - Create the Custom Gaming PC and Laptop Computer of your dreams
TigerDirect.com - Computers, Computer Parts, Computer Components, Netbooks & Electronics
Newegg.com - Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, LED LCD TV, Digital Cameras and more!

I also used Tom's Hardware to help me pick parts. Here are their recommendations for a graphics card at multiple each price levels.
Best Graphics Cards For The Money: March 2010 : March Updates

More than you probably wanted.

You can use ZipZoomFly, CrazyPC, FrozenCPU, Jab-Tech as well for parts.

I would suggest Newegg.com - Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, LED LCD TV, Digital Cameras and more!

When I get home, I will pick out parts with (or for you).

Im at school currently.

Anywhere between $700 - $1000?

Good job, but together we can make a much better system.

Yep, Newegg's a good reputable one, I usually buy all my parts from Newegg, but iirc, on ZipZoomFly, Win7 was about $10 is cheaper back when it was $109 on Newegg.

***EDIT***
Anyways, here's what I came up with:

witty_pseudonym wrote:Benefits of OEM or custom built from a reputable company = warranty for the whole system and support, and sometimes a better system than you can build yourself, if the system is on sale. Check out Dell.ca when a sale is on. They (and custom builders) buy parts, OSs and software wholesale, and I know in Canada I can't build what they sell for less when they have a sale, unless I get a free OS somehow....

Disadvantage = generally weak power supply, bloatware (truly astounding HP bloatware actually, but you can clean reinstall the OS maybe), less customization/tweaking/overclocking options, and you almost have to know more about computers and do more research to assess if you are really getting a good deal than if you had just built it yourself...
Never buy a computer from dell / alienware / HP... ect.

After taking a hardware course, and studying on my own.... I will never buy one, always build a custom on your own.

Asus M4A89GTD Pro/USB3 (~$150)
Athlon 2 x4 630 (~$100)
4gb DDR3 (~$100)
Western Digital1TB SATA3 (~$99 )
Radeon 5770 (~$150)

if you're getting it in a few months there will be a 6 core desktop cpu (Phenom x6) for about 300$ (comes out in April).

building your own system will cost you more than buying one on ebay. Check these two out, all you need to buy is a decent graphics card.

TRIPLE CORE ATHLON II 2.9GHz BAREBONE PC 2GB DDR3/500GB - eBay (item 200449420328 end time Apr-11-10 11:12:39 PDT)

ZT SYSTEMS 7302MA-C AMD PHENOM II X4 920 @ 2.8GHZ - eBay (item 370354012391 end time Mar-29-10 16:34:40 PDT)

both of these come way under your budget and will perform just as well. Only way you would save money is if you take out the parts of your own computer and install them in your new one(hard drive, dvd player etc.) even then you probally won't save anything. And if your like me you will have to have someone else to install your motherboard and everything else + another 100 bucks.

Motherboard is always the key to PC's longevity and well being.
It might cost $50-100 more ,but will save you much more in the long run:

890gx for example:
http://www.amd.com/us/products/desktop/ ... ipset.aspx

USB3
SATA3
Support for future cpu
cpu "core unlocker" feature (Asus only atm)
Overclocking headroom (that's where the savings come in,buy the lowest cpu in the family
and bring it up to the highest)
room for PCIe devices
better efficiency/power consimption
better Intergated video
better waranty
much higher quality
better on board cooling
better software/BIOS
more features
Crossfire
etc......
