A nice Dilema - Hardware ??

Ok currently running a :
Gigabyte - GA-965P-DS3, along with an Intel core 2 Xtreme @ 2.93ghz - Overclocked to 3.2ghz.
This was running hot until I added a water cooled freezone cpu cooler unit.
I also now have an ASUS Commando Mobo, with an Intel core 2 duo "wolfdale" @ 3.3Ghz - stock - running normal temps on stock air cooling too (interesting to clock with water cooling !! )
I can not drop the wolfdale into the gigabyte board, it does not like it - constant BSOD.
So its one or the other ?
.
Which one.

Have you defaulted the CMOS between using each chip?
iirc isn't the Core 2 extreme stock @ 3.2?

I have yes, and no the extreme is 2.93 - stock mate. (x6800)

Ah yeah, so it is. so what are you asking? Which one of the two combos is better.
I'd say of the two the Wolfdale will server its purpose better, larger cache and new 45nm Architecture.

Have a little read.
Plus, both boards are solid P35 chipsets, so all should be well there.

I have no personal experience with either of them but I would say:
Since the Extreme has an already higher score on stock settings and you are already watercooling and overclocking it I would go with that.

Rank: 129
Intel Core2 Duo E8600 @ 3.33GHz

The Extreme one he has is an x6800 Sniping, so its the Conroe Dual core, not the quad.

The newer wolfdale is the one to go for on stats alone, as it shows in my original link.
I did the same thing myself with the quad

Motherboards - I have updated both of the BIOS.
I take it there is not much in the Motherboards then really?
Wolfdale is the one I think for the CPU, as I thought.

According to the CPU support list here:
GA-965P-DS3 (rev. 3.3) - GIGABYTE - Support&Download - Motherboard - CPU Support List
The board should support the CPU (Which I assume is an E8600 based on that clock speed?) at the F14 BIOS, although it is put down as "Not Official Support" which could mean its hit and miss I'm afraid.
This only applies if your board is the v3.3 revision. If you have either the v1 or v2 board, support doesn't exist I'm afraid, hence the BSOD. From the looks of it it doesn't like the 1333Mhz FSB on most CPUs (So every 45nm one is a no go (other than the C0 stepping E8xxx series and QX9650 strangely enough) and the QX6850).

Excellent info thank you, I will have to check the rev no later - however I bought this board around 3 years ago I think ?

I think I have F13 BIOS, this may be the issue actually.
I have seen some people have this running on this board (it is a 3.3 I have) .
