It doesn't make it more realistic at all. In real life you would be able to tell who your friendlies are by approaching them.

You can't - without becoming a cheater. Removing name tags for video recording purposes can be done by opening console (~ key) and typing command:
renderer.drawHud 0

Thanks, I was looking this command, it is very usefull.
It works only in a local server.
