In 0.917 it happened to me several times, on different maps (Silent Eagle, Muttrah, some more...) that in the left or right corners of my field of view faint grey markers appeared, always an arrow with a distance under it, like the normal yellow move marker.
Once it led me to a corpse, once to an enemy hidden on a roof. As it appears and I move to center it, the marker vanishes and doesn't come back. Sorry I've got no screen of it, but if it happens again, I'll try to get a snapshot.
System:
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.8 Mhz
3 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 9400 GT (1024 MB)
All settings on medium except Effects - High, AA x 8

P.S.: The last time it happened I was SL, but I don't remember if I led a squad the other times.

SL and they are commander move commands. I know they show up on the map until you accept or decline them. but not sure if you see them in game.

No, commander markers look different, with a star on them, not translucent grey.
