[Question]Limiting ping increases due to network traffic

I remember the days when I played blackhawk down on dial up

feels like I'm back there atm because people are surfing the internet while I play on my network.
I'm happy playing with a consistent ping of up to 180, but since they are surfing it jumps constantly between 29 on a UK server to 300.
I'm using a BT Home hub v1 is there anything I can do to make it so I can play while they surf?
They are generally surfing forums and normal websites, no videos etc, so they don't need superspeed

We will need an exact setup of your network and what kind of access you have to the other pcs.
Getting a wired connection would probably help lower the possibility that the BT hub is reaching its limits with 2+ devices at the same time.
Some routers support traffic shaping. Some are DD-WRT capable which I think does support traffic shaping as well... "QoS". If u have access to the other's pc you could install software like NetLimiter there and reduce their Down- and Upload.
You could restructure your LAN in a manner where your PC is connected to the internet and grants the others access. This should prioritze your PC but requires that it is on so the others can surf.
Again we will need your exact network setup.

my computer is connected via ethernet, with 2 laptops connected wirelessly
though I think its just something the bt home hub v1 can't do, we're trying to get BT to send us the new version for free since they owe us like 200 quid when we paid an engineer to come out when they said our internet problems were due to internal wiring. (we've since proven that the problem was in the wires outside the house in BT juristiction)
will post to see what happens

Yeah, get them to give you the upgraded version of the BT Home Hub.
I use this and whilst I consistently find BT to be a somewhat despicable company to work with I will concede that the internet service has been absolutely spot on. Im in much the same situation as you Rudd, me on a wired connection with two other users on laptops with wireless connections. It never skips a beat, with my ping in PR never going above 50 for UK servers even when my housemate is playing WoW and my gf is playing browser games.

Its never actually the users fault the just blame every thing on them

for me i get 100 ping with my own country and the ISP says its normal -_-
also you should try to that new Hub maybe it improoves things if not try using a software to limit the other PCs internet speed like to 2mb/s
