Headset/Mic issue

I have the plantronics .audio 645 headset. the headset is great no complaints excpet that this is the second time that the usb has given out before the mic itself. I have tried but i can not get my pc to recognize that there is a mic plugged into it without the usb and that is trashed now. How do i get it to recognize that there is a mic plugged into it without said usb?
