Yamalia - Long Grass Doesn't cover you.

Hey,
We just played a game on Yamalia, where the enemy had a good FB set up and we were trying to attack it, an outright attack didn't work, so we crawled about 700m to get there - only to find, when we're still 300m away from it, that they can see us in the grass anyway. You might as well not have the grass! They were still fighting at one side, but they managed to spot up creeping on on them.
It's just stupid, and it puts any force actually thinking and using tactics at a huge disadvantage as they cannot see anything but their enemy can see them fully.
Just silly.

If you look far away without a scoped weapon you can see people 300m or more away in the grass if you squint. It's been around on every map.

Its the difference between Undergrowth (the grass you speak of) and Overgrowth. Undergrowth only displays out to a short distance while Overgrowth is set much farther away. This is why I always urge mappers to never have UG grass higher then a players eye line. Unfortunately we can not have thick grass as (as you see in game) as OG. Normally OG is for trees and bushed only.
This is also the reason we have started to incorporate the crops and grass made by Rhino.

I find that the swamps in Yamalia are not good enough to use tactically. The forests provide so much more cover.

Cant this be solved by some low detail grass, which will provide cover in these insatnces, wont burn ur computer and which will be replaced by normal grass on closer distances or while using binoculars?
Maybe im sayin just a bullshit...

Whenever you get Pwned think about what might have happened.
so many times people have been killed in a smoke screen and they go "oh ffs, that guy must be a hacker"
he couldn't have possibly been firing in to the smoke in case someone was there...
in your case, maybe a UAV spotted you, or one of you stood up alerting the enemy, or whatever.
the grass works, I've used it many times.

That was earlier, when some idiot from sq6 got his squad spotted. Then they started gloating about it while we were getting closer and closer, then, magically, they spotted all of us who had played tactically and properly for the last 5 minutes because the grass we thought we would be covered by (We couldn't see each other or anything except grass) didn't cover us at all.
Rudd - are you just saying that I'm lieing? It happened, and it's happened more than once, so obviously it doesn't work.
Also - it wasn't a lucky shot that got me, a .50 cal and an enemy squad opened up on our entire squad, laying down accurate fire onto our positions. No one had stood up, no one had fired, or done anything to give away our position, they could just see us.
UAV? It's not that Helpful Rudd, it wouldn't let them be able to pin point our positions. All they'd be able to do is fire blindly at us.

Either how Herbiie I find the grass very useful the times I have played yamalia, I found it hard to see the enemy the majority of the map its useful, but if you are in an elevated position I guess its easier to see through the first 100 meters.

Oh.... no.
UAV's see thing exactly the same way we do, so if they can see through the grass so can we, at the same relative distance.

negative Rhys, the LOD still keeps you hidded from teh side, but its been a bit of a problem to make it hard to see from high above.

Exactly. Actually if any observer is higher than you they have a good chance of spotting you if they look hard enough. I know I've spotted people in the grass who are crawling to my position by their backpack or luck. Other members in my squad say they spotted something and I would look over their for minutes and see nothing but eventually they'd be proven right.
Its all about luck. Besides I can't understand why you think crawling towards someone's FRONT is thought to be tactically smart. It really isn't. The people attacking on the front flank should either be an overwhelming force or a distraction for a flanking maneuver.

..
We WERE crawling to their flank, with a distraction to the front (Hence why I said even though they were being attacked from another side

) I know how to use tactics in this game, believe me.

i was in this round, it was utterly ridiculas in real life you'd be abel tos ee if the grass covers you and whats the point in having long range grass if it doesn't give you cover??? might as well just have undergrowth

Killonsight and maybe someone else earlier in this thread, not to be picky, but there is quite a distinct difference between cover and concealment. Cover implies something that stops bullets from hitting you, and concealment would be something that hides you from enemy observation.

We were concealed - yet the enemy could see us.
I'm not complaining that they could shoot through us - but IRL they wouldn't of been able to fire directly at us (Every single shot they fired at me suppressed me they were so close, until eventually one hit me). I wish people would stop saying that it's my fault that the enemy could see me while I was in long enough grass that on other maps people could walk right ontop of me and not see me - because it simply isn't, there shouldn't be grass which doesn't render at long range/you can see through that people IN the grass can't see through, it RUINED the immersion of the game, and immersion is about 80% of realism.

Yea, sudden movements attract the enemies' eyes pretty good. You don't want to be picked off by a lone sniper would you?

the grass on yamalia works great(with high settings). but I'm not sure about low graphics...

No they don't, because they fly above the ground and see the objects in question from above whereas on the ground you see them from the side.
I pointed this out in the team forums a while ago, most overgrowth LODs don't incorporate a horizontal plane that would cover anything beneath the tree, so while hiding behind one would hide you from being spotted from a horizontal direction, it wouldn't hide you from being spotted from above.
Putting it more simple, if you have never seen trees from above at a distance in PR, they look like this:
Same goes for those static OG fields, which Deer used on Yamalia and as also pointed out, both undergrowth and the static OG will look different depending on user video settings.
The other issue with Yamalia is the dark groundhemi which colors soldiers and vehicles dark and causes them to stand out in the bright areas, though I'm the one who should be looking into that *walks away shamefully*
