I searched for anything relating to this, found nothing, sorry if re-post. I've noticed that in BF2 as well as PR that when you are critically damaged in a helicopter, there's pretty much nothing you can do. IRL, when a helicopter is damaged, (I'm not saying shot with a Stinger, etc...) but when it's damaged pretty heavily but not completely shot, the pilot still has some control, although small, and the helicopter can go for a little and the pilot can even attempt a crash landing. I suggest that the critical damage health point be a little higher so that if a helicopter is being damaged pretty heavily the pilot can at least maneuver a little, kind of balancing the pedals and over compensating for a right/left damage point, and that the low health meter goes at a slower rate, such as when the damage is at 4 bars or something, the pilot has enough to at least pull out of enemy territory and try and crash land in a safe area.
Very Respectfully,
Ohais

Re: Helicopter Damage Control
Hmm...maybe my experiences have been too limited with Stingers and Jets and such where it's basically a auto-crash.

First of all, this is either a resuggestion or someone else has done something similar to this.
Secondly, there was a video of the Merlin on Basrah if I remember correctly that had it's critical damage tweaked so as to allow a crash landing and escape from the chopper before it exploded.

Re: Helicopter Damage Control
I've only died in a chopper if I crashed headlong into an object or steep terrain or received enough damage in the air to kill me, if I've been over a roughly flat area I've always been able to control it enough (but it is a struggle) for a crash landing and bailout.
I usually fly low though, so I'm not that far from the ground.

I've had the pleasure of being downed, and on the way, get pinged. I almost never survive crashes.

Re: Helicopter Damage Control
Was on muttra tonight on *NwA* server at the end of the round we lost dock and had one huey left I asked the sl if i could take it. I did 5 runs in with a full huey. Docks was like a showcase of things to kill other things. AA, HM,G TOW, BTR and AR on a couple of runs I took AA hits and lost a couple of guys off the side of the huey and even started to bleed out as pilot. On the last run with 15 tickets left I though right Ill give the lads in the back a good run as we lost any way and ill tell you this low fast and being a half decient pilot helps. Oh and the speed due to hit box lagg. I landed right on the hangers on the flag at docks 6 guys got out. On the way in a TOW went past i got hit by HMG and took one out of 2 AA rockets. as soon as i left the dock i got as high as i could as quick as i could over the city knowing it would take 20+seconds for the AA to reload. the alarm was going off in the **** pit but with the high and the damage causing me to lose power I fell in a controled way onto the carrier and started to reapir the huey as the round eneded.
More of a tail from the front but Im just highlitng its not just being able to fly you need to take into account the enemy asset reload time and how much control you will have when the bird is messed up. Better to come in hard and fast and slide the landing with the enemy shooting at your lagged hitboxed chopper with the time on the gorund knowing where they shot at your from and there reload time to work out your exit route then mince about. the damage is fine you knwo when youve been hit you know when you got 30seconds to get it down and even when its making the poping burning banging sound you still have approx 15 seconds to get back to a pad or land. Many make the mistake of getting hit and then dropping thepower to quick which causes the heli to roll. Dont panick fly it the same as you would normaly just land and you will survive, or paninck and die.
