Sound problems

Alright I've got a helluva weird problem here. Recently reinstalled PR on this PC, which I have used to play PR in the past. First time I played a couple of days ago everything went fine, except my mic wasn't working for some reason, it was just transmiting static over VOIP.
So I closed PR, went into dxdiag thinking my mic problem was caused by hardware acceleration being on under 'sound'. On bringing up the sound tab the slider was greyed out and under notes it says: "No sound card was found. If one is expected, you should install a sound driver provided by the hardware manufacturer."
Now, as far as I'm aware, my sound card is fine (if a bit old and crappy, It's onboard and this PC is about 8 years old). So I reinstalled DX 9.0c, checked my drivers and checked hardware status in device manager; everything checked out fine.
However, I restarted PR to find that now I have no in game sound whatsoever. I tried another game and the same is the case. HOWEVER I can still play music and stuff?!?
tl;dr Direct X doesn't seem to be picking up my onboard sound, I have no sound in game. However my sound is clearly working as I can make sound come out in other non-in game situations.
Would much appreciate any help with this, cheers. I will post details of my mobo and stuff but it's such a hassle to find out so it'll have to wait until I have some more time.
