Guides, manuals and such

Sorry to be so Newbie here folks, but I'm having a bugger of a time researching how to play the game (it just took me two days to track down my BF2 ID to register!)

Trying to access the Guide prompts a message asking for a User Name and Password. The ones I've set for this forum don't work... which ones does it want? I'm more than happy to read all the Guides and Manuals it takes to not annoy the forum, but I can't seem to get to them.

I've done a zillion hours on 2142 and not so many of BF2 (and despair playing CODMW2) so it's a conversion to PR thing I need.

Can I ask- what's the difference between downloading the PRSP add-on and simply playing a local server?

Cheers for any help- and any threads or resources you can point me towards.

Bag.

Ah... just found the Manual Download! Cool! What about gameplay? I tried an hour or so the other night and struggled to figure out the actual objectives, compared to straightforward BF2 (and 2142) capture the flag. It was Co-operative and after a while (I think) I figured out that while my team mates were "real", the enemy were Bots. Is this right?

There are several game modes in Project Reality. You were playing the Co-Operative mode. The most common mode is AAS (Advance and secure) which is similar to the capture the flag mode in BF2 however only a limited number of flags can be captured at a time. The next most common is Insurgency where there are a number of weapons caches on the map which are defended by the insurgent team. The opposing force needs to destroy these caches in order to win. The approximate location of the caches are revealed to the opposing force when a number of the insurgents are killed or arrested. There are several more game modes which are described in the manual (section 2).

What you want to do is go Deployment -> Join Internet and search for a BigD server. BigD is pretty much the only active Project Reality community in Australia. I encourage you to go and visit the bigD community website at BigD Gaming Community. It will also help if you have a microphone and join a squad when you play. Good luck.

Be active on the forums, read the strategy guides put on here.
Bound to learn something.

Also, keep your attitude clean... being a newbie can be tough but being a rude newbie will make you look like a fool.

Have fun

Heya buddy.

Do as nedlands said, jump in BigD and join a squad and listen to the squad leader and you'll be right :) Once you explain you're new everyone should be pretty easy going. If you cop some flak, just ignore them, some people are pretty touchy

Thanks guys, particularly Nedlands and Ford 'cos my next question was about Australian servers. Nedlands, do you get a reasonable ping rate? I've got basic ADSL here (ADSL2 not available)

Tonight's exercise is reading the manual, then I want to do a fair bit of Single Player to refamiliarise myself with controls- thus my question about SP versus a Local Server, for which the answer I guess will be in the manual.

Cheers, Bag.

I get around 60-90 ping on ADSL 2 which I find is perfect.

Always when something bothers you, make a thread. Reading the manual (cover to cover two times) is also very important.

Serious?
ADSL 1.5mb download here around kilmore, vic and get 30 ping. where you live?

Second the microphone thing, been playing for half a yr without mike and now i got one life is sooo much easier to work with your squad.
Another tip is to look for squads to join with a alright kit load out and seeing them sticking together on the map (simple click on the squad name and it will turn all players white). Try not to squad lead until you know the maps abit and how the squad leader kit works otherwise you'll find yourself very confused.

If you are looking for helpful tips on how to use equipment and learn map layouts play PRSP for a bit (even between online games). I did for a yr and learnt alot about the equipment. (bragging on)or just ask around the BigD community, it is the best of the best.(bragging off/) :p

I think good times to join the BigD servers are weekends around 2pm'ish to about late at night (most people leave by midnight though, but still good rounds after that) and 5pm to 11pm on weekdays.

Welcome to the team, hope to see you around!
(Glad to help you out anytime just ask, in-game: Jarryd_455495 or just PM me)
oh nearly forgot youtube is your friend ;)

edit: See, http://www.youtube.com/results?search_q ... y+0.9&aq=f
any of those are good

edit2: Dang so many things I want to say, look into deviation alot
here's some points I got so far about it:
- it nearly always makes you miss if your hurry so slow down and fire as a group (however the enemy always seems to hit first shot so stay near cover)
- before rounding a corner wait behind it for couple of secs, then poke your head around (new implantion in 0.9 that means deviation grows as you move till it reachs the max)
- never prone/jump in Close Combat it will kill you (proning/jumping resets deviation to max and have to wait again), crouch instead
- again with jumping, it is ok to walk when throwing a grenade but never do the run, jump, throw otherwise the grenade will go every which way
So yeah teamwork, deviation, microphone and have FUN!

Welcome to the community friend!

To answer your question about the GUIDE link, you can't access it right now. The DEVS have been working on it for about a year now and they will reopen it to the public once they feel the information they provide is enough for new player. I wouldn't expect it to be unlocked until v1.0 though, as I can guess that's their plan.

Like the others said a very very very very very thourough read of the manual is important as the game is a drastic step away from the vBF2 and BF2142 style of gameplay.

The biggest tips I can give you are as follows:

Follow your SLs orders, most players that go SL have a large knowledge of the game/maps and will know the best plan. That doesn't mean however, that you should become a robot. SLs are usually open to suggestions for plans...just don't tell a SL what to do. Simply make the suggestion and then follow orders.

- for the first few rounds stick to basic infantry roles and kits (ie. Rifleman or specialist) to get a hang of basic gamplay. Once your comfortable move up to limited kits when your SL requests them (ie. Medic, LMG, marksman, LAT, etc.) and only once you mastered those should you attempt the special kits (sniper, HAT, CE). This way you don't get in over your head with a valueable kit. Remember that kits take a long time to return to the kit pool....and they never return if an enemy takes them.

- I know it might be tempting to use vehicles, but try to let others use them until you've had a chance to practice on a training/local server. Vehicle as huge assets for your team and they can be a challange for new players. If you want, join a designated vehicle squad and learn from those using them.

There much more to learn and most players are always willing to teach. Just be polite and be sure to tell them as soon as you join that your new to the game. The way your squad can both teach you and watch your back better than finding out in a firefight that your unsure how to revive ;)

Have fun and see you on the battelfield!

The PRSP add-on was for older versions, as of 0.9 SP/COOP is integrated with the main package.

You can create a local server in either the Cooperative menu or the Deployment menu. The obvious difference being the option of bots, but also game modes, maps, vehicle load outs etc.

It's far easier to access and try out limited weapons and aircraft in COOP than in Deployment which is stricter and less forgiving.

Ah... thanks Snazz about the PRSP add-on. And thanks to everyone else. I'll be "out there" soon, but I really must get my nose stuck in that manual first. Talking of which, I think I can guess what "Deviations" are, but are they explained in the manual? I'll check now, so no need to reply, if they are. In fact, they might be worth another thread later.

Cheers, Bag.
