question about lazing targets

So the way I understand it, when lazing targets with the GTLD you first must select the target distance, designate the target, then call it in. The old way, you simply designated the target and called it in. Im curious, what happens if you dont select a target distance? Will friendly aircraft simply not see your target box? Or what if I select a longer or shorter distance than the target actually is, will the target box appear plus or minus however many meters from where I designated it? And can anyone recommend any good guides for target designating? Ever since they changed the system in .9 Ive had the hardest time understand it.

they see the box as long as you see a green square when you click. You only need to the radio o set the distance so that it shows up on the map for all to see.

As Crackshot says there is now a two stage technique for calling CAS:
1. Use distance and type of weapon CAS marker, this places an approximate marker on the map, but more importantly tells the pilot what weapons to use appropriate to the target.
2. If Laser guided or targeted ordinance are to be used then you must laze as before when the pilot is within 30 seconds which ensures the weapon is automatically aimed on the target.
So if you're not in direct comms through TS mumble or via CO use the SL marker, but if you're talking to the CAS direct, you could just tell them what and where the target is and laze when they're on final approach.

Ditto, everything that has been said!
Just to add that lazing works best when you know that you have some
kind of comms with pilot/gunner.
It's usually best to type up in team chat what it is that you are going to do
then make sure they confirm that they are waiting for your laze.
Then proceed as discussed above.
Something like;
SL/Spotter: Need CAS G6 KP4. Enemy APC
Pilot/Gunner: Confirm G6 KP4 waiting for Laze

one is laser guided so you need to guide the rocket with your aim to the destination
the second is laser targeted, so you need a laze. put your aim to the laze, wait till it locks on then just fire

The cobra has only one sort of rokcets the hydras, they are pilot controlled and theyre unguided. The gunner has 2 types of hellfire missiles, the one in slot 3 is laser targeted and is guided in by the gunner himself, in slot 4 is the laser guided missile, it is controlled by a laze set by the gunner or a spotter.

While we're on the subject of lazing, could someone tell me why it's so hard to get a green box target? IRL I would be able to shine the laze on anything I want, for as long as I want.

For number 1, does a commander have to be present to approve the CAS request? Thats what Ive heard.

No, commander doesn't need to be present, as far as I know.
LG Hellfires are manually guided Hellfires that go to the center of your screen. LT Hellfires are Hellfires that lock onto laser targets and are fire and forget.

The CAS marker is the same procedure as any other SL marker, infantry, tank or whatever.
For SL marker help look here:
https://www.realitymod.com/forum/f26-pr-bf2-bugs/79345-0909-sl-spotting-markers-dont-reliably-place.html
In the gunner seat the two types of weapons are shown on the HUD LT for laser targetted and LG for guided.
Go and destroy some stuff on SP.
