People watch Black hawk down, see there are BH's in PR, make a connection, fail to search and then suggest it.

That's one of BF2's main early concept art pictures. If you look on the left side of the pic, tell me what you see? Yes Fast Roping.
BF2 was meant to have fast roping in it as one of its main features in the early days, with even the basic concept of how it could work being tried out in BF1942: Desert Combat (the DC devs where brought on to help make BF2, then sacked before it was released...).
Anyone who was tracking BF2 before it was released knew one of its main features was meant to be fast roping, thou mid way though the development they announced that they where going to scrap that feature because they couldn't make it work well and although they could get it to work, it wasn't at all practical and most of the time looked totally stupid etc, only in the exactly right conditions would it look right and they also found that the player could just simply land the chopper instead of dicking about trying to get some players trying to slide down a rope.
Since then people have been asking for us to fill in that gap but now its more just people watching BHD etc who keep on suggesting it...
We also pretty much came to the same conclusion as DICE has ages ago, which is its not worth putting the time in to get it working since even if we do get something that works, it will most likley be very easy not to use it in the right way etc. We can spend that time on things that are going to have a much bigger impact on gameplay etc, where DICE could also modify the source code to make it work where we can't even work from that angle.

Well, we can see that that early concept is a little different from the present one... That's even shinier than COD4!

if some game maker somewhere creats a game where the individual helicopter blades had hit boxes ad actually spun. and the slightest touch of anything would cause the chopper to spiral out of control, then maybe fast ropes will be practical.
but for now pilots would rather jam that thing onto the tight street then hover over telephone lines as LAT/HAT/AR/AA/etc, bait

Unfortunately, the screenshot link no longer works, but a little trip down memory lane shows there was discussion of fastropes on the PR forums before BF2 was released even though it could have been for 1942.

Playing ramiel + looking at it = That map needs an update because it isnt up to PR standard.
I never watched BHD -> Never suggested something like fast ropes. I watched lots of Jurassic Park and suggested some dinosaurs instead.
