Battlefield 2 crashes uppon joining a server

EA's motto seems to be "EA, fuck everything." but then again, i guess the "EA, challenge everything" thing works fine too, because it's really challenging to make a game from EA work properly for longer than a few months.
Anyways, you can see the problem i'm having by reading the title. I've reinstalled many times without effect to this problem. Firstly updating to 1.41 when the installer asks me to, then going to download 1.5 of the net, then installing it. Even when i click the "Play BF2 online now!" shortcut, i still get the CTD. It basically freezes for a quick sec like it usually does if it works, but instead the music just skips a couple times then CTDs.
My Specs are
Its basically a Dell XPS 410 with a 1 RAM added, the 9800, and a new CD-Rom drive added. I tried to take the new RAM out to go back to 2 gigs of RAM (because thats what i had seen as a solution in other places) but it didn't work. Also, i feel like the new DVD drive might be the cause because that was the first thing new to go in and BF2 wouldn't work after (not sure though, i can hardly remember) then months later I put in more RAM and the new 9800 GTX (with PSU of course) with BF2 still having the same problem. Though i still have trouble thinking it could be the DVD-Rom considering that the installation is flawless and starting it up and going to the server selection works well.
Another cause could be ( i can't remember that well unfortunately) before i got the Bad Company 2 beta it worked, then once i got it, well, it didn't (i think

) I remember looking up online about BF2-BC2 beta related problems.
I Hope this is enough info, (or too much?

) i would really appreciate it if someone could help me out. Yea i realize "uppon" is spelled incorrectly.

I am not aware of a patch "1.51". There are different flavours of 1.5, like Beta1, 2 etc. You will need the final release. (
uTorrent link)
Your going for the right approach: figure out which change caused the fault.
- Make sure you are having the latest drivers from manufacturer (I do not recommend going with standard windows drivers).
- Clear the shader cache.
- Run in windowed mode to get an error message (and google/post this error): append "+fullscreen 0" to your desktop shortcut's target line
- Since 1.5 there is no need for a CD in the drive, so you can savely unplug the DVD drive to test if its the cause.
- for testing purposes lower all ingame settings and gfx driver setting (nVidia control panel)

Yes, i meant 1.5 i have that. I got the recent drivers, doesn't work. And when you say shader cache do you mean the one in My Documents\Battlefield 2\mods\cache? if so then i deleted all the ones in there and it didn't work. And i tried the windowed method earlier and i don't receive any sort of error message, it's just an abrupt closure. Lowering the graphics didn't works for like the third time... so i will try disconnecting the CD drive now... thanks for the help though.
EDIT: okay tried the CD Rom thing, didn't work. However i have always been able to play the singleplayer just not the multiplayer. So i thought it could be something Punkbuster related, so i got the PBsetup thing and manually updated the BF2 punkbuster. doesnt work. Man, i really want to be a loner and waste my summer playing PR but it just might not happen :/

that's it, a pitty it didnt work
Maybe the installers are corrupted, have i suggest redownloading from different mirrors using a download manager/bittorrent client.
(And ofc. reinstall)
Before installing PR, see if vBF2 1.5 works fine.

Well that's what i mean, vBF2 1.5 itself doesn't even work. Am i not supposed to put BF2 problems in these threads?

. I'm not going to install PR if BF2 doesn't work. Well, maybe i will to play singleplayer... I'm desperate.

Just try reinstalling the patches and Project Reality with a download manager like utorrent.

Have you redownloaded the BF2 patches and PR files using utorrent?

CTD'ing when attempting to join an online server, yet singleplayer/local servers work fine, is usually caused by a missing product key. I'm assuming Windows XP since that's what you put as your title prefix and that BF2 is installed in the default location...
Open:
Code: Select all
C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\Support\Battlefield 2_code.exe
Enter your BF2 product key
Then do:
Start -> Run -> "regedit" (without quotes)
Browse to:
Code: Select all
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Electronic Arts\EA Games\Battlefield 2\ergc
Double Click on "(Default)"
Put "x9392" before your product Key (without quotes), so it looks like x9392ABCD1234ABCD1234ABCD1234
Press OK and close Registry Editor
Try joining an online server again.
Have fun

if that doesn't work, try running gamebooster

Ancientman unfortunately that didn't work either... So what is this "gamebooster" thing which you speak of woodzkiller?

okay tried the game booster thing, and i'm really not surprised it didn't work considering it's supposed to increase gaming performance not magically fix problems.

I had this problem a lot in the past. What I did was to turn the texuren from high two medium. Not a single crash after that. Hope that helps you.

Had same problem. I had just replaced my video card 9600 gt with 9800 gt. Did everything I could; reloaded bf2-pr, defragged, reloaded windows, checked memory, downgraded video, etc.. Replaced 9800 gt with older 9600 gt and it works perfect for me on high everything at 1400x900.Anyone want to buy 9800 gt 1/2 off?

I have this exact problem. I do belive that it should be fixed by using battlefield2_code.exe. The thing is, using it doesn't make any regs for some reason, I am the Admin of the PC, I run it AS an admin and yet it wont show up in Regedit. The reg's just don't exist even after using the battlefield2_code.exe.
Searching for x9392 brings me no luck either.

this is what they sugested on another forum aswell
btw, gamebooster has helped me with other games that crashed, although this in those case happend while starting the game, it could also be possible that your pc can't handle the settings, whitch is what happend to me with bc2

Ok, I had the same problem as you, and this fixed it for me :
PunkBuster Update -
PunkBuster Online Countermeasures
I really hope this works for you because it did for me, make sure you have 1.41, 1.5 installed when you update punkbuster.
