[Request] Shi Lang (aka Varyag) Aircraft Carrier

Lots of good modelers in here, and I'm completely hopeless at it, so I make this request:

The Wake Atoll map needs some sort of ship to launch the Chinese forces from. This vessel appears ideal:

She's the Varyag, a refitted Soviet Admiral Kuznetsov class.

It's a big project but it would be the most realistic thing to have on the map.

Any takers? >.>

Quick edit:

Here's a model I've found but I'm not entirely sure of it's quality, the render doesn't look that great.

whats the difference between this and a Russian kuznetsov carrier? kill 2 birds with one stone?

There really is none. It's just, the Chinese own this one ;)

They intended on making it into a "casino"..

Cough.

Though really, I could just buy that model if it's of high enough quality (if no one will make a model, it's not that expensive..), but I'm not an expert on quality of such things so input from someone else would be nice :P

Would need retexturing of course though

Parts would need to be remodelled, it would need to be optimised, probably uvmapped, retextured, have LODs created, this doesn't necessarily include stupid things the modeler may have done. Although it is only $20 you'll end up with a bad model that takes almost as much effort as building it from scratch. Especially since that models lacks quite a lot of detail on the deck, arguably where the player will spend most of their time.

:? DON'T buy it. It is a baaaaaaaad model by the looks of it. And frankly if that can sell for $20 then the PR team should just dismantle all of PR's assets and sell them. We'd be millionaires in no time...

This Carrier is in fact called the "Shi Lang" now, used to be called the Varyag when it was being built by the Ukraine but China renamed it not that long ago.

Quite a few minor differences, China have been modifying it with some of there naval technology like modify the main masts to put on there radars etc.

EDIT: some interesting info on the ship: http://www.strategypage.com/dls/article ... 4-2009.asp

Ye, that model dose look really, really bad.

Dont ever fall into the trap of buying models, you will just waste your money.

To put it frankly Startrekern, if you want to get this carrier your going to have to learn how to model first, then your going to have to learn how BF2 statics are made (which will mean doing a bit of relearning to modelling) and then after you have first gained quite a bit of experience by making a few BF2 statics, then you can start to think of taking on a project of this size which is going to take over a year to make, that's with any detail at least which it needs for a FPS.

NOT ANOTHER RHINO... but seriously that is a horrible model :S It looks like someone crapped it out of their pants and painted it... -twitch twitch- ANYWAYS... I'm sure you could get someone to take it on, but don't have high expectations. We are all quite busy my friend :)

There is no substitute for skill and time investment when it comes to BF2 statics. Even really basic things are rather complex, and the multi-piece carriers are another step above most statics.

It might be easier to figure out how to clone rhino :D

What excatly is "cartoonish" about it excatly? Is it the Ski jump because they are very common on many aircraft carriers out there. Most Americans think they are really wired since there navy dosen't use them thou I'm really surprised the US Navy / USMC hasn't adopted the design, not even for there LHDs that carrier Harriers etc (other than it would take up a bit of space for the V-22s).

Ski jumps basically mean the flight deck can be much, much shorter and also drastically lowers the risk factor on take off since even if you do have an engine failure etc your much higher off the ground and as such have much more time to react if you need to eject before you plunge into the sea.

Not the ski jump, although it doesn’t look right, but the hull in general doesn’t look right either and the plastered look with no running rust or other imperfections and lack of detail etc. It just appears more fitting for Heros than anything else. You don't agree? I have been around ships some and was crew on the RFA Lyness after we purchsed it and renamed it USNS Sirius. Also served on carriers and am very familiar with them and how they operate. Even British ones, having drank beer on the HMS Ark Royal. :-D

Cool well probably down to it still being in construction and not that long ago and the hull getting a new coat of paint (painted in the PLAN gray colour).
