What is Project Reality?

Alright as you can tell this is my first thread and post I am new here. I was looking for BF2 mods and came across this site. All I'm wanting to know is what is PR? Is it free? Is it a pretty cool community or is it full of jerks? The reason I ask these things is that I'm not the only one that will be playing on your game. My little brother (Adopted before my parents got shot and killed) is 12, and my son who is 5 likes to play games as well so I'm going to let him play this game if the community is nice (Little brother will probably be watching him play just to keep an eye on him.) But, that is all and I'd love to hear from you all and I'm glad to be here at PR and looking forward to see you all. :)

Hi mate, welcome to the forums, Project Reality is a free modifcation for bf2 aiming to make it more realistic while preserving gameplay.

while the community is generally a good lot, people are still people, some servers are better than others.

I'm sorry to hear of your loss, personally I'd advise a boy as young as 12 or 5 should probably leave this kind of game alone until the age of 14+ :) (cuz people swear, its an intense experience etc etc, BF2s ERSB rating is 16+ afaik)

the enjoyment of this mod very much relys on the ability to work with others, which requires patience and maturity :)

I have no problem with people swearing.. It's a way of life, they are going to learn and do it anyways, I already know my lil bro cusses cause I got a call from the school saying a teacher heard him and his friend do it which I thought was literally **** because I used to cuss out my teachers when I went to school and they wouldn't do nothing about it but cuss back at me and then we'd get into a fight which is why I didn't go to that school anymore.. Lol, but maybe a little worried about cussing on my son because I just got him to stop cussing not a while back because I felt bad since he was cussing it made me feel like a bad parent.

Like the rest of the world, the community is a mixed bag. The players here tend to be extremely serious and aren't going to be so happy to find out that a 5 year old is the one that TK'd the entire squad. Rough language over VOIP is pretty common. My opinion is that the 12 year old is going to be fine, the 5 year old....not so much.

This game does not play like Halo, or CounterStrike. It can have a much slower pace between fire fights, and be wildly hectic during one. It is not meant for those players that can not follow orders, play as a member of a team, or those that want to run off and do their own thing.

Have the new player read the manual, it's posted on the main site, to get the feel of the game. Create a local server so he can practice using the vehicles, as they don't work the same way as BF2 Vanilla.

Hope that helps.

Yeah we were going to test the game out as soon as it gets done downloading in 6 hours lol. But, can you patch the regular BF2 client with this game patcher and it still work for PR? Or no? VOIP is Voice Chat right? Also I don't really know if I can play on the game servers much unless someone has a hardcore dedi server with nice internet (My internet blows 180kb/s download ftw)

better than me :P

to set up bf2 for PR, you need to DL the 1.41 patch, install it, then the 1.5 patch, install it, then run the PR part 1 and part 2 installers ;)

I'll just download the full client and play CS 1.6 or BF2 till its done :P
The reason I said my internet blows is because people usually kick you if you lag and stuff, especially CS.. Which sucks lol

I wouldn't let a 12 year old play PR, really, unless you think he's VERY mature.

You can't enjoy this game without quite some patience.

A high pitched voice alone might already piss some people off (though that's certainly not the main problem).
But if a player goes running ahead of his team, shooting blindly, or takes a cool looking helicopter just to crash it (or to randomly attack enemies with it, while it would be needed elsewhere), he'll quickly get himself kicked from a server.

If you think your brother can handle that, you can let him play of course. But if that causes trouble - we warned you :p

But warnings aside, welcome to the game and community!

Couple of words for the PR community: the most friendly and peaceful community, well there are some jerks that try to be cool, but they end up kicked or banned XD.

To TB: Yes I mean this for real.. Most 5 year olds play online now these days anyways.. Some even have cell phones..

To Spec: He doesn't have a high pitched voice if he does then all he has to do is holler my pc has a bass input on the options to make his voice deeper. When I had extra cash I had good internet and me and him would play Bad Company 2.

well to be honest m8, a 5 year old would not be able to play this game. Just playing this game as an average grunt requires strategical thinking and patience beyond the ordinary.
This is the best mod around, but games can often last 3 hours and in that time span you might only get 16 kills (which by no means is what the game is about).

A 5 year old would not be able to function in the world of pr. it is very different from cs or other shootings (that 5 year olds can definitly play) but this is much more a mil sim than those.

The 12 year old can play the game required that he has a good patience for his age, and is smarter than the average 12 year old (many of them would simply get frustrated)

I hope you have fun with the game, but only play it if you are with them and if you got an understanding of it first, if not it wouldn't be fun for your 12 year old and would just be frustrating.

in my opinion, this game isn't for 5 year olds. this game takes A LOT of patience and is really different from other online shooters where there is non-stop action. i just don't know if he will actually enjoy it. i would try the game out for yourself first and see if he would like it.

btw the community is awesome. i would say alot of the fun in PR comes from the people i play with.

i see it coming that shooter games will be banned cause to many children played it. i will not discuss if its ok for a 5 year old to play a "killergame"
and when i look out of the window luckily most 5 year old children play in the outside or somewhere else and develop their brains and their body to a good level.

12 years, maybe.

Get the 5 yo some LEGO kits n stuff.

Game is just too demanding, even for a 12 yo to get below average efficiency.

Honestly, I don't see how games get frustrating. We all 3 played XBox Live for a while but I switched to PS3 (Free Online Gaming.) So we play on that.

He has patience, right now it's about 110 degrees outside and that's not to fun to be running around all day with no sprinkler around.

Same with the quote above. 110 degrees no sprinkler isn't fun, I experienced this from my childhood. It's alright for a while, but the humidity here just makes it that much worse.
