Version 0.X - Bad image?

I wanted to call this thread "Does the 0.X version number scare away potential players", but since it was a bit to long i made it something else.

Anyway, today at school I was talking with some classmates about videogames/shooters. We talked about goldeneye and halo and call of duty. And we reached Battlefield 2, some classmate said the following thing:
"I like the concept of BF2, but I hate that nobody uses the Squad system."
and
"I wish BF2 was a bit more tactical and realistic"
Most of them agreed. So I asked them if they ever heard of Project Reality. Well guess what...THEY DID! But they didn't try it out because
"Isn't that mod still in beta?"
"When is the final version coming out?"
So, some guys who wanted something like Project Reality for BF2, didn't want to download the mod because they thought it was still a beta version.
I kicked their asses (no, not really) and told them to skip class (no, not really) and download and try the mod.
Right now they are downloading the mod and I will play a few rounds with them tonight, but this made me wonder. I guess it's ignorant of them to not even try a beta of a mod, but maybe there are more great players out there who don't wanna download the mod because of the 0.X version.

I know the DEVS think of 0.X as just a number, but still...

it reflects the continued development of the mod

though initially i believe Ver 1 was goint to be when the brits were finished but that was a while ago lol.

Yeah the amount of Bugs in PR geeeez :P

Each update in PR, is almost like a small booster pack or expansion pack compared to Bf2

I honestly think it needs to be better informed on what PR is.

They need to tell people that even though the number is a "beta" number, it's not really reflecting that it is a beta. There are still lots of things to to add, but the game already is pretty decently solid. It will change with time, but there is enough difference to constitute that it's "NOT" a beta. ;)

I agree with Nytemyre

Despite it never occuring to me that it might have been Beta, but i'm too curious to let that slip away ;)

But maybe the next decently big, could be called the 1.0 ?
We gotta start somewhere... and it's not like its a final product, but isn't the current version stable and solid enough to call it 1.x ?

Theres not even any BF2 equipment textures left.
Only thing PR and BF2 have in common, is the engine, world graphics, and stuff like the spawn/kit menu.

There are a lot of things still in use, lots of various statics, almost all PLA vehicles, some MEC vehicles etc.

Sooner or later (prolly sooner) PR will have reached 1.X numbers anyway, I assume

Look at the commercial games that came out in the last two years or so. Every single one of them should still be in beta lol. At least here player's input is actually read by developers and contributors and lots of good ideas get implemented. People just need to give it a try. Oh yeah did I mention it's free lol

I find people make a lot of assumptions about PR and not much can be done about it.

In this case I think they just have a narrow view of what version numbers mean and probably don't understand that mods are traditionally an ongoing project (unless development has stopped completely). Some mods like Goldeneye Source call their public releases 'betas' but for the most part it's not really an appropriate label.

I found the 0.91 thing worrying at first to be honest. It wasn't until I actually saw some youtube footage of PR that I decided to download it (As most "Realism" mods are normally just the vanilla game with less health). This mod could definatly be 1.0 though.

Spoke with them today and did try the mod, but they complained about the long walk distances and waiting times... *blegh*

Badcompany 2 is ---------------------> That way.

With the beta number thing maybe some dont have a clue about mods in general?
Most mods that are completed are small mods that dont do alot mostly.

Some mods just pick a number of choice for example a mod im currently playing is 3.6 in number but still in develepment IE its more a dev choice and dont really mean anything about content.PR is a good example of this.
