Performance and Punkbuster issues

I've recently bought a new pc, and PR was one of the first things I installed. I've pretty much had some kind of problem with it ever since, several Punkbuster issues and poor performance for most of the time.
First off, my computer specs are:-
Processor: AMD Phenom X3 Triple-Core 8600 2.3 GHz
Memory: 2048MB RAM
Hard Drive: 320GB (Over 200GB Free)
Graphics: ATI HD 4350 512MB
Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium
As far as I know I'm completely up to date with Punkbuster but most servers I join I will eventually be kicked from, every now and then it is PnkBstrB.exe initialisation error, most of the time it will be PnkBstrB.exe heartbeat stopped. I'm not sure why this keeps happening, but I have a feeling it is something to do with my connection/ping, which for some reason skyrockets for about 10-20 seconds every now and then.
As for performance, it seems that Windows 7 doesn't run PR very well, I mean I even get lagg in Local servers which involve not connection, just purely my PC running PR. I have downloaded a Game Booster to help this, which it has, but it still runs poorly on a lot of maps.
I don't understand why a new computer would run something like this so poorly, and this is probs my favourite game/mod, so I'd really like to fix these issues. I'm not a computer whizz so I mostly try the simpler solutions, but any help/advice on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Your GPU and Ram seem not enough for PR. Especially your GPU is a weak one.

The graphics card should be sufficient. Your problem is your RAM.
When you're playing PR, try and check the RAM usage.

For help with PnkBstrB.exe heartbeat stopped:
Check Punkbuster B is set to auto re-start.( works for me)
=HOG=Romeo_One_Three wrote:Open your Control Panel. Go to Administrative Services. Click
on Services while PR is running. Select Punkbuster B, right click, select properties, select the
recovery tab and make sure they all say "Restart the service" for all three dropdowns. You can do
the same for PB A, but generally speaking, it's the B client that stops responding. Any time you
update PB, you may need to re-do this step.
W7 users = In services ( inside the 'log on' tab) check box which states “Allow this service to interact with the desktop.

Thanks for letting me rant

Be certain and thorough in that you have performed the basics by deleting previous instances of PB from your OS - UnInstall Punkbuster from your PC, Re-Boot system, THEN go to: C:\Program Files\EA Games\BF2 folder\pb (delete entire pb folder), THEN from "Start" or "Run", open (type in) >> "regedit" and go to: HKEY_Local_Machine/System/ControlSet001/Services, ControlSet003/Services, and CurrentControlSet/Services/delete any instances of PB A or B, THEN head over to: C:\Windows\System 32"scroll down til you find any Pnkbstr A or B and remove, and finally check "My Documents" Bf2 folder there to verify that pnkbstr K is removed.
Now reinstall PunkBuster (pbsvc.exe AND pbsetup.exe)
Next, if you start the game and get a PnkBstr B "heartbeat stopped" kick:
1) Open Task Manager
2) (Game not on) Select "Services" tab, and verify that Punkbuster A is "Running" - give it a quik re-start to make sure.
(Game is on - alt tabbed out) Check "Services" Tab to verify both "pb A and B" are running. (This is the best method while game is started but b4 the kick happens, so you need to have Task Manager already open so you can access it fast, prior to game play.
3) Now select "Processes" tab - For both PB A and B, right click each, and select "Set Priority" - set THAT to "RealTime". pb B will always attempt to default back to "Normal" on priority, but as long as you check this each time you first begin a game session, you should be good to go for the entire time you are logged into the game. NOTE: Normally I would perform this adustment to PB after the map is loaded, but B4 I hit "Join".
Whenever I get "Heartbeats Stopped" kick from PB, I immediately go thru this check, adjust it as needed, and have no further issues for my sessions.
Hope this is of use

Good luck

What?! Since when is a card that is one step up from integrated graphics sufficient for a high requirement game like PR?!
Look at the review for that card...
ATI Radeon HD 4350 versus EVGA GeForce 9400GT :: Performance - DirectX 9 :: Motherboards.org
It is comparable to a 9400GT, which was the second lowest 9xxx series from Nvidia at the time. His GFX are certainly
not sufficient, at 1024x768 and everything on low I'm assuming his performance would hit around 30+, but PR is atrocious at those settings and I'm guessing that's not what he has it set to. Bf2 defaults to all things medium from memory, so I'm guessing that's what it's set to.
You're right that 2GB of RAM is also insufficient, but to say his graphics card is not part of the problem is laughable to me [even if you added the qualifier 'should']. As
this review of the HD4350 says:
review wrote: The Radeon HD 4550 will run you around $45 - $55, while the Radeon HD 4350 will be priced at $39. Generally speaking, if you're a gamer you're not spending any less than $150 for a graphics card - so these GPUs are mostly for enabling hardware Blu-ray acceleration or providing a boost in performance over games running on integrated graphics.
For something like PR in the budget bracket, you'd be looking at a Dual core AM3 Phenom & mobo, 4GB+ of ram, HD5750 or HD5770 if you can stretch, paired with any decent low wattage PSU and you're away. This setup would be around 440-460 depending on which GPU you chose (the 5770 is way better) including CPU+mobo, ram, case+psu, graphics. Peripherals & HDDs could be reused from older rigs.

In response to the RAM and GPU, I'm guessing there's not a lot I can do about that without buying better ones. I can't do that at the moment as I have no supply of income so I guess I'll just have to put PR on hold for now

, when I got the PC I had no idea that the graphics card and RAM were far too short of the PR requirements, as I said before, I'm no computer whizz. But anyway, thanks for the advice all, at least now I know why it was performing poorly.

No worries. As a FYI, when you do run into a bit of cash, you can pick up a HD5770 which should eat PR (except fallujah west but everyone chugs on that) for ~100GBP, and another 2GB of ram for ~20GBP (or less). You'll just have to check 2 things:
- That your powersupply has a 6 pin cable coming out that should say PCI-E on it
- If your motherboard uses DDR2 or DDR3 (i think it's 3 but best to check) ram. They're roughly the same performance wise, but they're not compatible with each other so you have to buy the right one.

Buy a cheap but good videocard ( +/- €/$ 50 ) and get some more RAM, either buy it or get it from an old computer. I had the same problem; my PC is like almost 4 years old I have a bad videocard. I also had only 2GB of RAM, I got myself another 1GB stick and now it runs smoothly in general.

I have an AMD Phenom 2 x4 Quadcore running on 3.01 ghz, 4 gigs of DDR2 RAM and an HD4870 512mb and am running windows 7. You'd think that PR would run smoothly with those specs. But, it runs quite shit: Fallujah for example has the worst performance, then comes Gaza Beach, it is still playable, but I get around 30 fps or maybe a bit higher or lower sometimes. And then there are other maps where I have decent FPS (80 - 100) but even on those maps on quite some occasions I get low fps (45-50 ish) in certain spots. I really don't get the terribly low performance of a mod (even if graphically improved) of such an old game on my, not super-new but quite highspec rig.
I had to get this out, because I want the performance to be good so badly as I really fell in love with the mod, even though I just started playing off 0.91. I see other people with better specs than me having problems too and then there are people with lesser specs or the same specs as me who are having perfect performance. It's just plain strange.
