Given the delay you're suggesting i'd rather still press f3+c while driving a tank. ;]

I feel like this has been suggested before but idk i think it might be hardcoded

I don't think a dynamic engine system arma style can work in bf2, only way for this to work without getting out the vehicle is going to be sound wise I think.
I wonder if there is a way to limit the number of times the idle engine sound can repeat, then if you stay still long enough the sound just stops, unless you press W again, and then the acceleration sound comes on with the normal car sound, then stop again, idle cycles X times, and then stops. Maybe. Problem is I don't know if the engine restart sound will work when you press W again.

Couldn't it be made so, if the velocity = 0, then the sound is a fading engine (or a 5 seconds "engine on" followed by 99999999999999999999999999999999999 second of "engine off", supposing you have to loop the sounds?)

in order to stop the engine, you jump out
Just go to another seat: a passanger seat or the fifty cal and hunker down there. Perhaps the tank should have a fourth position, one that is safe inside the tank and has a periscope view, but doesn't actually provide any weapon or control over the vehicle. Just an extra passenger seat that would allow for the driver to "switch off the engine" while remaining safely inside. This extra position would still require you to be in the same squad, so that it can't be abused for transportation of blue team mates.

If it isn't possible to create an "all stop" button then I do like the idea of a fourth position in the tank. If it requires a crewman kit and you to be in the same squad as the other members then easily it could be seen as the "commander" position. Rarely is it ever right to have three people in tanks currently as they are vulnerable, largely useless (unless as eyes/ears), and hamper the ability of the driver to actually go engines off.
In a perfect world I'd suggest having the position be litterally inside the tank with a fully rendered inside like some APCs, but a periscope view is perfectly fine too.

Like a loader's position! I'd still like to see some way that the .50 gunner (AKA commander) could either turn in and use optics, or just use some binoculars.

for the tank they could just add an extra seat in it that is just like the driver seat view but with the engine off. cant really do that with the other vehicles though.
i know i hate losing the driver seat spot that allows you to zoom out and search for targets.

I think tanks have APUs that can power everything without the main engine being on.
Oh, and crouching in the 50 cal position can still get you killed by an RPG/grenade/Hydra 70 to the top.

I can't find the quote however iirc there is enough power for like 30mins of turret control after the engine is turned off.

_PLEASE_ add a "Commander's Seat" to tanks with a variety of view angles, CITV, etc. This would allow the engine to be 'turned off' when the tank is stationary and allow the driver to retain views of the exterior, etc. If thermal is ever implemented it could be shown from that seat as well.

but would you want it to just be a 4th seat, or would you want it set so that only the driver/commander can use it? e.g. if a dude got in and sat in the 4th slot would you want it to go "you are not part of this tank crew please exit the vehicle"? (the basis of the reasoning being that we can't waste more people on the armour with only 32 per team)

Remove the .50 on top and make it a CROWS style that is integrated with the Commanders' view. And not literally the Commander like the guy that rules the squads, but the tank commander.
I.E.:
Tank driver pushes F3, switching into Commanders' Seat.
Pushing 1 brings up CITV, standard ("Striker" style) view, say with a few levels of zoom
Pushing 2 brings up CROWs view with only 2x-3x zoom or whatever
Pushing 3 brings up a communications device similar to the handheld SL radio so that a tank crewman can give intelligence, request support, etc.
Maybe if Thermal is ever added you can add a CITV view for Thermal

Couldn't you just make it a weapon. o.O

I dont agree witch this suggestion, way how tanks are working in PR isnt much closer then in BF2. Standing and waiting for target witch off engine, to make tanks in PR realistic we need 2 things.
1.Stabilization(HardCodet)
2.Engine is allways on, or when its off gunner cant move his tower(I think the best way is to give engine sound when gunner is on his position).
