Project Reality's filesize.

Currently it is over 3.5 gigabytes which is freakin' rediculous. I've had a look through PR's files and I noticed there are a number of things that aren't needed.

Are there plans for removing those unecessary files and reducing the file size?

if you look at the latest games they are huge, so I'm not suprised that PR's size has increased :P

e.g. Napoleon Total War is 15GB!

Battlefield 2 bad company is 10GB!

grand theft auto 4 is like 18gb.

crysis is about 8gb

Some of the stuff in the folders are like WIPs that will eventually be in kits ect.

They also run on different engines, have higher quality textures, bigger maps, etc. Plus BF2 doesn't have DX10 or 11 or whatever.

I don't understand, why would the DEV's include WIP's in the public files?

I'm not sure if WIPs would be the right thing to say, but there are some easter eggs and such

3.75 Gigs is really nothing at all, lol... dont know where youre coming from. What do you have, a 10 Gb HD? :P

Admittedly there are also a lot of statics and such that need to be phased out of maps, but its not as simple as saying "Well, we dont want to use these buildings anymore" because they are still placed in old maps that are still used...

So we cant really remove them from the files until all of the maps using them are removed or edited to use new buildings. And what normally happens is new mappers place the old buildings/statics in the new maps and so the statics never get removed ;)

Things like that... there are others things that are there taking up some space, but I really dont think its too much.

What are some of the files you claim arent needed?

Each PR map is pretty big regardless of the statics it uses or doesnt use. All the lightmaps and terrain data files, etc. The levels folder alone is almost 2Gbs out of the 3.75. If you want more maps, the file size will get bigger. More than half PR's file size is in maps so theres really nothing to be done.

This has been brought up a million times already...

Basically I think that the people who are concerned with PRs file size are concerned because more ISPs are limiting bandwidth usage these days. Here in the US, ISPs like Comcast and Time Warner are the biggest culprits, putting some pretty awful monthly bandwidth caps on their users. I dont think its so much an issue of PR taking up harddrive space. If your harddrive is too full to put even PRs paltry 3.5gbs on it, then you may have a severe porn addiction.

The bandwidth cap issue is an understandable one, however I think the PR devs hands are tied. I doubt theres very much they can take out of PR that will really make a significant difference on the file size. As it is now, older maps are often removed when they dont get played much anymore/are unsuitable for PRs current direction. Plus I think the majority of people still have unlimited bandwidth so the file size is not really an issue for most PR players. Not to mention theres probably plenty of people like me who wouldnt care if PR was 50+gbs if that meant we could get the full awesome PR experience that the devs are trying to give to use. For free.

The best solution I can propose is download the files and keep them on an external harddrive or a USB stick. That way at least you only have to download the files once and update to PR seem to only happen about once every 6 months? So it wont be often you will have to download anything new.

well thats a little bit of an exaggeration

i think around 10 is reasonable for the epicness of PR

This. PR is tiny in comparison to the latest games, if you're current folder size is particularly large I would suggest a reinstall.

Locked due to pointlessness.

Pretty much any of the unneeded files in the mod take up very little space. Like the nuke for example, in total that's somewhere around 900kbs... when compressed into an installer its going to be much, much smaller...

We do remove as many of the unneeded files as possible but then by doing that we may remove something that is in fact needed by anouther file like a selection icon or something and then we need to put it back into the mod etc.

Any major parts that aren't needed or can be optimized trust me, we do.
