[Texture] Glock, We've all got to start somewhere!

So recently I decided I should actually stop thinking about it and just do, so I've ploughed in to learning texturing, so with the guidance on Wilkinson to point me in the right direction (and supply a few good tutorials) here is my first result!

And the texmap;

There's a few areas that are a bit patchy, but I'll go over those when I've looked at the next tutorial (AK) and have broadened my skills a bit more.

Criticisms and comments welcome as always :) .

Nice job mate. But that is just begging for a nice normal map :p

Also, I strongly advise racer's tuts if you are looking for more.

Again good job! :)

If you want to see what mine looked like just ask.

It's incredible.

EDIT: read in model thread Vox got it from the skinning tutorial. There is a glock modeling tutorial that makes a very similiar glock.

looking good, although i would redo the grip texture on the handle, did you by any chance take a rust pic and desaturated it ?

keep it up, also the color differences between the dark and light plastic might be a bit too much. it is looking very good though.

Yeah that was the tutorial I was looking at next, hopefully that will give me a lot more of an insight. I'm starting to learn what all the different maps are, but what is the function of a normal map?

Thanks dude :) . Some of your early and current texmaps would be great if you can, just want to see how people do stuff differently to get a broader idea.

Thanks dude, and thanks a lot for the help :)

Yeah, the glock modeling tutorial also has a skinning section, that's what I used and he provides you with the .max file that he created from the model tutorial, so I used that.

Thanks. Yeah, the grip does look a bit =/. It was the base texture but with a texturize filter added, doesn't seem to have enough depth though. Like I say I shall most likely re-do it when I've learnt a bit more. Yeah the differences are a bit odd, I'll admit when adjusting the final levels I rushed a little bit as the end was in sight haha.

Thanks for the kind words all, shall post up how I get on with the AK tutorial :) .

I agree, with more practice and honing of your use of brushes, you could become a very valuable team asset ;)

***!Warning!*** Personal opinion;

When using racer's tutorials don't be afraid to think for yourself. In MY opinion he does some things very sloppy and doesn't consider some potential issues.

He is however a pretty great texture artist.

Haha, I'm flattered, thanks :) . You mention the brushes, got any quick tips to help me improve?

Thanks for the heads up, I shall try and think around what he does. Could you give an example of the potential issues, just so I know what to look out for? Cheers.

Had a break today but will most likely be starting the AK tutorial tomorrow, so will put up a WIP thread for you to help me along and give opinions if you don't mind :) .

I got a couple people have told me.
-When Using brushes, don't always go 100%, think how scratches look realistically and try to match it. some are bright/dull/thick/blemishes/etc
-No Scratchs is the same, always try for variation of brushes. I suggest getttin some scratch/grunge/rush brushes and mess with those.
-Regarding of the thickness of the scratch, always keep in mind how it will be effective to create that simulation on your Normal Map. We'll talk more on that though when you wanna start on Bump/Normal Mapping.

Go through this mk-19 Thread, Chuc posted a few good pieces of help as well as Trooper and Rhino :)
