Very weird problem/return to desktop at startup

Hey hows it going.
I recently had a problem with bf2 not detecting the shaders and decided to reinstall the game. The thing is my disc drive is broken and doesn't read DVD's. So I took the disc drive out of another pc and everything seemed to be going fine until I tried to get bf2 to run.
I get a black screen for a few seconds and then im back at desktop. Ive been looking for solutions and someone else managed to solve it by accident when they installed a new disc drive in their computer.
Computr specs
Geforce 6600GT
2 Gigs ram
Cant remember mobo
Athlon 3000+ processor
Windows xp
What ive tried so far
1.Uninstalling/reinstalling the game again in the order bf2, bf:special forces,1.5 patch
2.Messing around with the refresh rate of the monitor (dont think I did this right though)
3. Updated direct x
4.Asking my computer politely to make it run.
5. Swearing
6. More swearing
Im out of ideas lads.
[EDIT]
Turns out this problem also applies to my copy of bf2142 which I also just installed Sad
I set it to run in windows 2000 and I made it a little further with 2142. The startup image appears along with an error saying it cannot locate the dvd. This is weird as I can acess the dvd in my disc drive and shouldnt affect any of the games based off bf2 as since 1.5 you have not needed a disc in the drive.
