Using a joystick in place of a mouse for land vehicles?

So I got a joystick and it works great with air, but I would also like to be able to control a tank turret with it and that's the problem. There is no setting that allows me to use the joystick in place of the mouse for land vehicles so I was wondering if there was any way.

Get the program "Xpadder" and set up your joystick to work as a mouse. That's what I do to be able to play with my 360 controller.

Erm you can set your joystick throttle for the tank, thats the only really useful feature of using a joystick to control the speed.
But yeah, doubt you can make the joystick control the actual turret.

That 360 controller thing got me thinking and I got my ps3 controller and PRed it up on TG just now. What I learned. Keyboard+Mouse>Controller... by a lot. It's so hard to use a controller in PR, granted it's fun and different, you will die.

To make your joystick to move the cursor and thus controlling e.g. tank turret, you have to edit controls.con file manually and add 2 lines of code into it.
Code: Select all
ControlMap.addAxisToAxisMapping c_PIMouseLookX IDFGameController_1 IDAxis_0 0 1
ControlMap.addAxisToAxisMapping c_PIMouseLookY IDFGameController_1 IDAxis_1 1 1
These lines have to be added into "
ControlMap.create defaultPlayerInputControlMap" section of the file.
Values of "
IDFGameController_X" and "
IDAxis_X Y" depend on your game controller count and axis directions, respectively. You probably have to find correct values by trial and error. Values are zero based, so if you have only one game controller, the correct value for controller is "IDFGameController_0".

That would be interesting to see the joystick being used as the throttle. Fewer jerky starts, the ones that always seem to run down small children crossing the road in main bases.

Only in land vehicles though. If you try to play infantry with a joypad you're gunna get raped.
Were PC Gamers Too Good For Microsoft’s Cross-Platform Gaming Project? | Gizmodo Australia
"I’ve heard from reliable sources that during the development they brought together the best console gamers to play mediocre PC gamers at the same game… and guess what happened? They pitted console gamers with their “console” controller, against PC gamers with their keyboard and mouse.
The console players got destroyed every time. So much so that it would be embarrassing to the XBOX team in general had Microsoft launched this initiative.
"
The only nice thing about using a joystick for gunning is that it's pretty sensitive, but not too sensitive, and the fact that you can spin in a circle completly without having to stop to reset your mouse when you run out of mousepad.
If they ever did do a reverse sensitivity (more mouse movement actually = slower turret) Joysticks would be key

I haven't tried the helo gunner, I wouldn't say it's easier to use a joystick or controller, but it is a change and kind of fun to get used to.

Hmm i am able to turn the turret of a tank with my X52 pro... By just binding it. But i found it hard to use. Cause it turns to fast. It's not as precise i tough it would be. Also i try'd using my steering wheel to drive hummers... I could never get that right either. Everytime you steer you have to overcompensate to go back on the road.

I cant convince myself to buy a joystick they are pricey, if you already own one of course, but i know someone with a steering wheel for like pc racing games i think it works PR as well.
