Mouse suddenly only worked diagonally?

Hi.

The thread title is self explanatory.

I was in game and then suddenly my cursor would only move in a diagonal fashion, making it impossible to play.

It stayed like this until I created the thread. I think it's back to normal now?

What could have caused this?

It's a Logitech G9.

I'm pretty sure the logitech G35 is a headset.

Is it a laser or ball mouse?

If it is a ball mouse, have you:
-Cleaned the rollers recently?
-Been very rough with the mouse? (Bashing it on your desk)

If it is a laser mouse, have you:
-Cleaned the lens?
-Switched to a light mousepad instead of a dark one?

Did you try unplugging and plugging it back in?
Have you tried reinstalling the drivers?

Is it a USB mouse?
If not, are the pins bent?
-If so, use a mechanical pencil and straighten them. To do this, retract the lead and gently place over the affected pin and very gently straighten the pin.

You're right lol

It's a G9.

It is USB and laser. I will try cleaning the lense/sensor.

Thanks for the tips.

The problem just happened again.

It was very brief in duration.

I twisted the wire from the end of the mouse and it seems to have gone back to normal almost instantly. Well, not normal it is a bit different again but it's better than having a useless diagonal mouse.

I think it time for a new mouse....
Sounds like a wire problem.

May I suggest this one?

Yeah I think it is a wire problem.

You see on a G9 the cable is like a shoe lace... and it seems like the wire has entangled and fused into itself at two locations somehow?

That sounds so messed up. I'm going to take it to a friend who is an electronics engineer.

Yeah.

I had another issue with it happening and couldn't fix it...

until I got the scissors out!

The fabric had split.. and entangled and bent the wire in a horrible position I cut it and I hope to never have the same problem again. Cutting this one peice undid an additional nasty bend in the cable.

I suggest you unplug it now and find a replacement, you could cause yourself to get a nasty shock...

Mice do not have to be expensive, as long as it works. Honestly, I wouldn't buy anything fancier than this.

Newegg.com - Microsoft Wheel Mouse Optical - Mice

Well,

as it happens I believe I managed to overcome my problem without buying a new mouse!

I downloaded a driver patch for the Windows 7 drivers and installed it incorrectly. Now, set point doesn't load up at all and I don't have diagonal mouse problems.

Thanks Logitech for breaking Set Point and fixing my problem :D

In my experience, logitech is a piece of **** for mouse. And pretty much everything else, headsets, keyboards, you name it. Ive been disapointed by them for everything I got.

My best mouses EVER were microsoft, especially the old ones. My first optical microsoft mouse lasted me 6 years!! And it was the left button who died on me, not the laser, lol!

Boilerrat is right about the fancy stuff, useless unless you REALLY want some extra buttons or something like that. The simpler the better, in my exp.

This tends to be my approach to everything in life :)

However, this time the simple solution was not consumerism but disabling the driver it would seem.

When I get a Macbook I'll get a lovely, cheap and corded mouse.

Wireless = not simple because of batteries :)

Too much faffing. AK47 mouse ftw.

Good luck gaming on that.

Happy your problem was resolved, I hate logitech... The only thing they make that has lasted me is their keyboards.

Don't buy a headset from them.

Hi,

I had similar problems with 3 of my A4tech mouses:
One (G9-570HX) was broken years ago after few months usage, the other two lasted for years but last week one of them broken (G9-730FX) and today the 3rd (oldest) one (G7630) too. :(
The reason and the symptoms were the same: the mouse dropped down accidentally then the cursor started to move only diagonally (bottom-left to top-right and vice versa).
I have tried to disassemble and clean each of them before but had no succeed.

Now I went to a step further: I have disassembled the sensor IC too:
- There are 2 little square holes (2mm x 0.5mm) on each side of the back (top) of the sensor IC. I have pushed in to one of them with a very thin screwdriver -> on the opposite side the sensor cover plastic plate (with the small camera hole) popped out
- Then I have blew out the dust (or whatever small particle that may have caused the problem)
- Then I have put (click) back the small plastic cover plate
- Then I have assembled the whole mouse together
- And lo and behold: It works again! :)
(Now all of mine mice works perfectly!)

I hope it helps (even though mine mice were not Logitech)
