On the matter of smaller maps and smaller number of players on server

There are currently five smaller (less than 4km) AAS maps where both factions are conventional ones. Of those maps four are imbalanced terrain-vice - that is the other team has to cross the sea to get to objectives which oftean leads to more people messing around with the choppers and less people fighting - fatal for the team in question and overall gameplay too.
For servers with a smaller player base it's not a good situation. It's hard to get a proper game started with about 20 people. Firefights don't happen very often and they are mostly far from intense. On insurgency it's pretty much the same, the maps are smaller though but it's hard to get intel. That being said, I've had a few fun rounds with as few as 4 players on a 2km map. The way people play matters a lot, but it's not the whole case.
In the previous versions you had smaller maps that were perfect for fewer players on the server (like EJOD Desert, Tad Sae, Ghost Train, Seven Gates.. etc. most recently) Of course they were fun to play with 64 players too!
I wanted to point this out and see what everyone thinks of it. Many of us miss the old maps and would like to have them back in the game, I'm sure. Can't really remember what the reason was for removing them in the first place, but I'd like to have some of the old maps back too and not just for the sake of nostalgy! Or perhaps some new smaller maps

A lot of servers have a period of build-up earlier in the day, and then a gradual drop-off towards the end. With the lower number of players at these times, smaller maps might be good.

I thought I heard they took them out because the size of the mod would just be huge.

i like smalll maps toooo. i miss maps like OGT and sunset valley.
yeah on servers with <30 people, i just **** around/seed and wait for the server to fill up.
also, plus side of smaller maps is that they generally run alot better performance wise

Ejod, and OGT wish a map pack would come for these maps.

I think in general the larger maps are too big for 64 players as it is.

For everyone who misses OGT, its going to be part of the PR: Vietnam mod. Which is great because I think that map suits it perfectly.

The "levels" folder of PR is 1.62 GB and it contains 23 maps. I don't think a couple more would hurt anyone

Yeah, skirmish is good for a small group of course, but it really gets old after a few of rounds. I think that's because it constrains the players more and lacks the variety of AAS, as in vehicles FOBs etc.

Exactly. Sometimes the build-up goes straight to drop-off, unfortunately. That doesn't have to mean you can't play a single good game

Yeah but with 30 more??? "HUGE"
Anyway the DEVs removed many of the old maps, because they wouldn't suite the gamemplay anymore (I'm not thinking the same way but well). There are enough threads of this kind, where people start begging to bring back the old maps, Rhino already explained in a similar thread the reason why so many of the maps were removed. He also said that some will be redone and brought back as "new" maps (ex. old Basrah/Muttrah..stuff like that).

The purpose of this thread is not to beg the old maps to be brought back to game, but to discuss the need for smaller maps

Skirmish mode isnt what hes asking. That does get old since its only small infantry engagements.
I thought about this yesterday. That theres no small maps for all the servers out there who cant frequently get up to 64. When I was in a community that was slowly moving away from PR I certainly felt that that was missing. The hours I spend in a half populated Basrah (if we were lucky)....
But, on the forums theres the general belief that if you want something, you should make it yourself. Fully agree. Best thing would be to just pick up the map-editor and make a map that fills your needs. If its good enough it might be integrated in the mod. If not, just put it up on your clansite and play it with your clanmates and some random's that have downloaded the map.

Running custom maps would reguire everyone to download the map and it would probably just lead to an even smaller number of players, since not everyone that otherwise might join the server would know about the whole thing. And if we did that, we might as well run the old maps
That being said, I
have picked up the editor and you might be in for a surprise in some while

yea I know thats what it would lead to. If your clan/community would organise an event around it you could at least play it for an evening
cool cool
