Hey, I've been playing some PR (mostly SP against bots) and alot of BF2 vanilla and stuff online. But never really got into online play.
Does anyone have any tips or things for a newb like me to start playing PR?

Ok, you started with some PR Singleplayer. Which I think that is always the best option. Just expand it to Mulitplayer by read the manuel and slowly join the online community and dont go fast into new things like flying and heavy verhicles. Just join a squad and let them point you the way. They will help you.

Since you've played SP I assume you know the game mechanics, but it's still a mandatory tip; Read the manual.
Then when you get online, don't go straight for the cool stuff. Join a voip inf squad and tell them you're new, most people will help you out when needed. A mic really helps.
As you play more MP, things will just come naturally and before you know it you're a veteran.

I few things I strongly reinforce to new player is
1. Observation is the number 1 aspect to staying alive. Noticing what cover you have around you and determining trends of enemy forces is what keeps you alive. Never just intensely look at the back of the player you are following. Those few pixels moving you see in the corner of your screen could always be an enemy just about to shoot you.
2. When traveling, always imagine the enemy as about to shoot you and prepare for it. It seems like a daunting task but being ready to dive into cover or immediately start shooting back so that other members in the squad can either take cover, shoot back or observe for more targets.
3. Always announce what's factual and not necessarily whats on your mind. For example, some squad leaders such as myself like to problem solve out loud. " We need to find some cover so we can start engaging the guys to west" You notice that you are standing in a low ditch with the visual of the enemy and everyone else is standing on a hill. You respond..." There's some more cover here..." Little comments like this that enhance the entire squad. This is a branch off the saying that *communication* is the most important aspect of teamwork. Announcing an enemy location right before you, yourself, engages adds precious seconds to a squad and player reactions; and when you play long enough, you'll see a couple of seconds is the difference between who gets shot first. You don't want to start saying things you just assumed " I think the enemy is coming behind us...." is an example that could- confuse your squad members, slow the squad movement, and overall adds clutter to communications.
4. Spacing- Being close enough to the squad leader and other members but far away enough so that you aren't equally suppressed when they get shot.
5. Don't tune yourself out when you start intensely shooting at an enemy. There are sometimes changes in circumstance that warrants you to stop shooting and change position. Missing an order can simply get you killed with no hopes of getting revived.

Zrix offered some perfect advice

Thats usually the way. If you join servers like UKWF, TG and maybe even NWA you might run in to some experienced players who might want to help you out

sorry, took a wrong turn and ended up in a different thread.
its good that you started with singleplayer. if you havent played PR online, you should start in a coop server. it will help you get the basic tactics down and will give you a feel for working with other people. Veterans Gaming Coop is a great place to go.
as Zrix said, a mic is really helpful, and you should stick with infantry at first.
dont hesisitate to tell people your new. if they kick you from the squad, you didnt want to be there anyway so dont take it personally.

Thanks for all the replies guys.
I've been playing some skirmish mode at the moment, just getting to grips with "how to play PR" style. As most games online im used to are radicly different.
Yea, Anyway. I've seen alot of AAS mode on there; can someone explain what AAS is? and how it works?
Anyway,
Thanks for the help anyway. Humans are surprisingly tactical. I kinda expected them to all be running about bunnyhopping spamming grenades all over the map. So its alot better than I thought.

Assault and Secure.
It's very similar to how Conquest works in regular Battlefield, except each team has a set order of what to cap and when.
The manual will help you out here, I believe.

Maybe you should go online and play the "Cooperation" mode. Players versus Bots, or so I think. Probably suits better than going straight online to face tricky humans.

Random tips that I picked up when I started playing:
-Never "give up" if there is a medic in the area or a member of your squad can get to a fallen medic kit. Your team will thank you for the unwasted ticket, and you will get a little breather to contemplate what you did that got you killed in the first place. Learn from your mistakes. "Maybe crossing that parking lot with no cover-fire" was a bad idea.
-Let the "experts" handle the heavy assets. Don't even attempt to try flying in online until you are confident in your abilities. Just grab yourself a Rifleman or Specialist kit and follow your squad leader.
-When disembarking from a helicopter, do it quickly and safely. The longer the pilot has to wait, the more likely he will be shot down.
-See that tiny dot in the distance? Sure, It may just be a bush or a rock, but don't hesitate to take a quick look at it through your binoculars. It may just be a sniper.
-Try watching some youtube videos. Some of them may be "out of date" but they still will give you some tips on what to expect.
Finally, Join a squad, tell them you are new. The only way to fully get a feel for Online PR is to actually get out and play it. You already have some basic background knowledge from COOP, so you should adjust pretty well.
Also, Welcome to the community!

hi i was new too and considered a noob until i got voip working. It really helps to have a mic. Another tip - if you join an infantry squad you should follow your squad leader everywhere. EVERYWHERE. Unless he says so. Welcome to the community!

Very good tip even pros don't do it : whenever your SL puts a marker don't look at it. Why? Because all the members in the squad will look at it, it is natural, it caught your eyes and your attention.
If everyone is looking at only one direction, watch the other side because maybe that's where the threat will come from.
Numerous situations I have found myself in where enemies wiped us out from the back where everyone was watching at a marker.
To sum up: always covering all the positions (N-S-E-W) even in a friendly zones (those darn lone-wolfing-shotgun-crazed specialists

)

The best tip you will ever get:
Patience
Weither its setting up an ambush as an insurgent, or walking a long distance as a bluefor, or vice versa, 9 times outta 10 PATIENCE will play off in PR.
Once Ive waited so long on a rooftop waiting for my killzone to get filled, I litterally lost any sense of time. Ended up scrapin 2 tanks and like 10 infantry with one click.

Learn how to use the medic kit. It works different than in BF2 and even different than in PR singleplayer.
You have to be able to use if if the medic goes down and you're near him. And a good medic is a good addition to every squad

I always snipe the medic first

Or wait for him to get to the wounded.
Gotta love the fact still 3/4 of them still dont know how to use the smokes properly

I'm a noob at how PR works, but I know all of that stuff. I am not an utter noob. But thanks anyway.
And thanks to everyone else. Very helpful.
