Driver updates and such

Hi there,

I think I have a problem here, games doesn't run as good as they should. I think there's been some sort of malfunction when I updated my drivers. You see, some time I began having graphical errors. The computer broke my graphic card(long uninterresting story) somehow. Anyways, I got new, same model and downloaded and begun happily playing PR. I couldn't for months that's why I didn't care.

Now, when I updated those drivers i think I downloaded the latest one. Lately my windows update have been telling me to update my card but fail to install it. I look on the date released and it was in 2008! I believe there's 3 drivers for this card. 2008,2009/10 and 2010.

Now if I go into this site
Can You Run It?

and take Americas Army 3 as a selection

it says I can run with minimum requirements - but recommended.

now take a look this

it's suggesting me to upgrade..To a worse graphic card?!? Am I right? 8000>7000 when it comes to Nvidia cards?

Ok, what I want to know:
--> Do you have to update drivers in order? First released, first install?
--> Can you delete your current drivers? Where are they located?
--> Can you somehow see all the updates for my graphics card?

--> Is there any hope for me at all?

System Specs
Windows Vista

AMD Athlon 64 x2 dual core 5600+ processor

NVIDIA GeForce 8300 GS

~3.5 gig RAM

No, it is the opposite. You are usually instructed to uninstall previous versions of drivers first.
However, when it comes to drivers order it is imperative to install "chipset drivers" for your motherboard first.

Yes. Usually NVidia drivers are installed into "C:\NVIDIA" and uninstallers can usually be found in "Programs and Features" they usually start with "NVIDIA ...".
If you have installed NVIDIA drivers by means of "Windows Update" you might find it within the "Update History".

There will usually be only one active driver (with maybe residual parts of former drivers).
"Device Manager" should give you a hint. But generally I have not found a decent way of determainig the current driver version other than using 3rd party tools.
Also: Note that there is an "Uninstall" option if you right click on your card inside the Device Manager.

Yes.
1. Do not use Windows Update for drivers. (Only if you are desperate and nothing else works).
2. Get the latest drivers from your manufacturer.
In your case this is NVIDIA.
- Go to Welcome to NVIDIA - World Leader in Visual Computing Technologies
- Click on "Download Driver"
- Use Option 2
-- Select "Graphics Drivers"
-- follow the instructions

Note: Although higher version numbers do indicate newer models does not mean that they are always better. Especially GS sub-versions can be inferior to "GTX" and "OC" sub-versions and of a lower version. PassMark Software - Video Card Benchmark Charts

I just wanted to point out that your 8300 GS is NOT a very good video card. it is considered low end.

if you look at the numbers 8300, the 3 means its low end as opposed to the Gefore 7950 which has a 9 meaning its a high end. the first number, 8, just means what series it's from, so your 8300 is a newer card, but is a bit slower and cheap. my old 6800 GT still outruns my 8600m GT i think.

anyways, i think you should upgrade that video card. :)
