I don't have a headset that will plug into my computer, but I would like to chat
I have a computer mic
and I could just use headphones to hear the chat better
Can this work? Do I need to get a headset?
If it does work, how do I go about setting it up?
,Much love

You don't need a head set. I use a computer mic and my ipod headphones. Works fine for me. It's all about personal preference

there is a settings test environment included in the bf2/pr options for mic configuring.
and yes, you definitly should get a headset, because
- quality of computer mics is - lets call it - bad (environment sounds, volume)
- you cant play properly, at least i couldnt
- a headset good enough is less than 10 usd, use google for half an hour + amazon = profit

I smashed a children's toy microphone and fashioned my own mic with the usable pieces. I did this by wiring it along pipe cleaner and wrapping it with electrical tape. Then I made a strap so I could remove it from my headphones whenever I wanted because I also use them for my ipod. This was all free since I already had the toy, pipe cleaners and electrical tape.

never use speakers, high quality stereo headphones + attachable mic is the way to go. Audio Technicia AD700s are what I have along with a good sound card.

I have a crappy $5 headset which I put around my neck for the microphone
Then use a pair of $100 headphones for awesome sound which I also use with my iPod.
If only I could have PR sounds come out the speakers and VOIP on the headphones!
Also chicken, iPod headphones = very bad for your ears

If your computer microfone is good enough for other players to understand you then there shouldnt be any problem? High quality headphones benefit is that you can buy one which supports 5.1 or 7.1 audio system which allows you to hear the direction where sound is coming from, that helps alot ingame. If you dont have 5.1 or 7.1 and you want to get it, you could just buy headset with microfone at the same time.. note that your soundcard must support 5.1 or 7.1 too.
Speakers supports surround sound system (5.1 or 7.1) better but requires alot of room around your computer so you can place 6-8 speakers in a circle around you, also you would need to have your own house with no neighbours because of noise =P

I've used my laptop mic to play PR for more than 2 years now, it's no problem. As long as the quality is good enough for people to hear and understand you, there's no reason to spend money on a headset with a mic

I only use speakers and everyone can hear me very well. I do have a cheap headset of which I'm only using the mic. I'd personally never go for a non-headset-microphone.

Likewise I use speakers for all audio, and have a microphone mounted onto an earpiece, kinda like the one below for voice comms.

You do not need a head set. But trust your uncle Oddsodz. It's best to get some. As for what is best. There is great debate about that here in the forums somewhere. 5.1 or 7.1 sound systems (including headsets) will give you a great advantage in game. As for mics. I Am using a $1 Mic from "Pound Land" and it works fine and I have no complaints from players about my mic sound levels.

A surround sound headset will run you up around $100, and I think surround speaker systems are about the same, if not more. Check to see if your mobo has 6 channel audio, then you could spend $30 on like 3 sets of speakers, maybe different ones for the centre and sub.
I got some of these:
For only $0.47 each when QTY 50+ purchased - RCA Plug/2 RCA Jack cable - 6 inches | 2-RCA Audio Cables to do that. You could hook up a surround sound system for a TV using these. You'd get more wattage for less price with a TV system.
Those adapters are actually pretty good BTW, you'd expect them to be about as thick as speaker wire but they're actually about the same thickness as a USB wire.
I don't have this setup, I use a headset.
Back on topic, get a headset. Don't be the idiot who's speakers play back into his mic and repeat what everybody says. You probably could prevent that problem while still using speakers if the mic was strapped to your head, but I'm not sure that's how acoustics work. Just reading here and that's what Chuck's doing.
