I was just wondering why there aren't more of them when facing insurgency, especially on bomb-carless maps. It seems like a valid stratagy for every player in Opfor to load up in every vehicle and roll to the known cache, with nothing able to kill them (all), or even stand against them effectively.
Instead usually it's just squads go off piece meal and get pwnd.
It also seems like it would be fun as hell to have 2+ squads with armour support.

I personally love convoys because as BLUFOR it feels epic and in an open area you have an advantage, as Insurgent if you have the proper tools it can make for an epic ambush.
I was playing Insurgent on Korangal Valley and I set an Arty IED and some Claymores on a village chokepoint and a mine just up the road. 2 Humvees and a Logistics truck roll in a blow the claymore, everyone panics and floors it heading straight into my mine killing the first humvee, some guy with a LAT came from behind me and took out the second Humvee and then the logistics truck made a run for it using the Humvee scrapyard as cover they made it around a hill and were takin out by some other insurgents. Immediately following this the village cache became known and 2 squads were raiding the village, I fall back a couple hundred meters until I see the text saying the cache was destroyed, and I blow the IED taking out most if not all in the village.
Convoys are realistic and fun for both sides and I wish there was some sort of game mode to lead a convoy through chokepoints across a map or something of that sort.
But the real reason people dont do many convoys are because what happens in a well set ambush.

I've only been apart of convoys on Karbala. But that's mainly when Fuzzhead is the commander. He's a beast of a stratigizer on that map.

Yeah, essentialy that. Convoys are high risk - concentrating all of your toys in a neat bunch makes it pretty fun for insurgents to find new ways to blow you to hell. It's a matter of luck, really, will they stumble upon an ambush or not.

I believe that only a game like PR have a community that is serious and mature enough to organize something like Convoys, and I see a lot of convoys, especially right in the beginning of matches.
I agree, usually NATO troops in real life always travel in convoys, and it seems a tad unrealistic when humvees go speeding off alone into the battlefield just like the EOD team in The Hurt Locker which was railed by military veterans for its unrealistic depiction of military procedure.

very often they're not that effective - ends in chaos

I was CO on NWA Karbala a while ago, we managed to get a convoy together with almost everyone (who I could tell where happy to try it for lols) except .... the tank that went shopping for RPG rounds in the town.
I think they are a very effective technique on Karbala with all the open spaces but you need nearly 100% support from the players or it won't work, one player even parked a vehicle across the base entry to prevent guys from rushing off!

You are free to plan and do a convoy thats so great about PR you have thousands of things you can do different to take down the same goal.
Usually its maps like basrah that works great with convoys open ground and maybe o to many involved can make such moves very effective, the killer of such moves are SLs who dont know shit.

Actually, I tried using this strategy on Karbala when I was a Commander. It was a beast tactic. Every cache my team set out to find was destroyed. Though, given, all of those caches were in horrid positions. It just made me happy to see the other team saying "OMG ZERG RUSH" whenever a cache intel showed up.

Did this the other day on Al Basrah. We would attack the cache, setup and withdraw every time. All the caches would get overwhelmed.

I remember that karbal round it was a awsome sight setting up a FOB north of the A/B3 village. Then once we was set up and the strykers had arrived and started pounding the north wall. You gave the go order and the hole team stormed the village. We even had the LB laying down hydras just south of the advancing line of troops.
Convoys are good on open maps where you can get some wide spread cover. But in city streets it can be madness.

Convoys when properly coordinated and manned can be pretty much unstopabble. Yes you run the risk of losing everything but you have ALOT of firepower and used properly should be able to handle even the best laid ambushes.
Some of you may remember this, the entire team is in one big convoy all round.

this is all based on the idea that people actually work together. sure, you can have 5 vehicals in a line, doesnt mean they're not all doing their own thing.
