CTD help thread (locked for spamming, see new one)

This is just an announcement to let people know we're working on figuring out the cause of all the CTD's that are happening in 0.95.
So far,
we've figured out what is causing lots of crashes on German maps and a fix for it will be implemented in a bug fixing patch. We're doing our best to figure out what's causing crashes on other maps as well. Lots of people have posted their error logs in the bug section, but we're of the opinion that none of the errors coming up in the log are the cause of ctd's.
How to help
So here's how you, forum goers, can help. The simplest way to find a cause for a CTD error is to run PR in windowed mode. In the vast majority of cases, when a CTD occurs, anyone playing in windowed mode will get an error message upon crash which will contain the details of what has caused the crash.
All you have to do is just play PR! Granted it's windowed mode, but just play like you would normally.
So here's the steps required,
1. Run PR in windowed mode,
- right click your PR shortcut and go to properties
- In the Target section, add a space and then "+fullscreen 0" (if it's already there and set to 1, just set it to 0)
- To switch back to full screen, just set it to 1 instead of 0
2. Play PR!!!
3. If you get a CTD and an error message pops up,
- Press "Ctrl+C" to copy the error message
- Reply to this thread letting us know what server you were on, what the last thing you did was, and paste in the error message into a quote block.
- Alternatively, you can hit "print screen" and upload the image of the CTD + error window for us.
- If you get no message, please still report but clearly state you got no message.
As for how long you play in windowed mode, it's completely up to you. Personally, I will be playing in windowed mode for the next few days (so will a few other devs and testers). Hopefully, we'll be able to figure out the cause of all these annoying CTD's and have them all fixed

I have not run in windowed mode, but i did notice a prError.log text document created in my mods folder, but i doubt you want 386 KB worth of errors posted here, so i will upload so you can see what it tells you on your own computer.
i would like to note though i only had CTD on the first day.
have not had one since.

I hope this is helpful. After installing 0.957 update I have having issues playing - the program crashes all the time, mostly after a few minutes playing.
Now, here's what I didn't see people reporting - when I tried to play vanilla BF2, it crashes as well !
I am pretty sure that it's related because a few days back I played vanilla BF2 for quite a while and it was working without any problems. In fact I don't remember it crashing ever.
I've got Vista 64, 6G ram, 2.3Ghz Intel CPU. I still have PR installed.
I'll try to capture any error messages.

Try deleting your cache, see if that helps?also I recommend when generating new cache do it offline in a "ok" performance map.
C:\Documents and Settings\Avii\My Documents\Battlefield 2\mods\bf2\cache - delete whatever is inside that perspective folder

How much RAM & video card memory do you have?
crot wrote:Right, I took your advice and lowered textures to low, everything else is max and it connected yet its very laggy. Its deffinately the textures. Burning sands is the only map with this problem for me. Also, the graphics already look ugly even with only low textures, lol.
Same question as above - does it run on medium textures?

Just wanted to updat ethe dev's on some thing iv noticed, i have for the most part today been playing PR in windowed moded as they have asked of us.
Iv noticed that for the most part i am no longer CTD'ing usualy now only occusrs on the hugemaps (very memoary intensive) were BF2 CTD's on map load as its used its memoary pool up and also at the end of round when changing map
I am not getting the speradic mid game CTD's.
to test this out i switched over to full screen and within 20 mins of playing Mid game CTD.
Huge Map CTD (Windowed mode) See:

Hm... after trying to load burning sands on low textures, then on medium I thought I'd try to load it on HIGH again for the hell of it and it connected like 3 times in a row now. Weird. And it doesnt even lag, I think it reseted the textures in a weird way this way. Can someone else having the memory problem on burning sands try this out and see if it works?

Example:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\mods\pr\pr.exe" +fullscreen 0

Playing the HOG 24/7 Muttrah server. 800x600 Windowed, All high, x4 AA, Med. Textures.
AMD x3 (unlocked to x4) core Phenom 3.11
2 gigs RAM
9800 GTX Geforce
Windows XP Professional 32bit
Went the whole round without any issues, but as soon as the server ended my window suddenly closed. I didn't get to see the ticket score, I was on the U.S. and we had won. No error reports popped up and nothing even got wrote into my prError.log. Just a disappearing game window. I was flying the transport huey.
Not much else I can say. Every time I crash, I don't get any error messages and the only things that were written into my prError.log were the following..
Monday, October 18, 2010 2:25:42 AM

The only CTD's I got in about 12 hours were when a whole team is suddenly crashing while the other is still complete. Haven't had a "personal" CTD by now.

Well it was both. I always failed at loading Burning sands since release. So when I CTD, the server was still there with almost 60 or more players in it when i logged back in. So it was because of my comp. But I fixed it now. But the mass player CTD is unavoidable now even if you have a monster rig, cuz its server side.

I got one on Wanda Shan AAS random standard Friday night. Actually I was in the team who didn't got disconnected this time : the 32 Russian players suddenly disappeared, I heard on TS they all got CTD (we first thought the CTD hack had come back).
The second was on Silent eagle CnC infantry, this time I was Russian and got the CTD, the server had ~50 players IIRC, I think only 6-8 of Russians didn't crash, or crashed later.
The third was yesterday on Lashkar valley insurgency standard, same as above with 64 players connected. No Talibans CTDed and only 6-8 german players didn't crash.
(2 times on HeroS server and 1 time on FH Invictus)
