Games Wont Work on 2nd HDD

i recently bought a ssd, reformatted my old OS hdd and installed only win 7 (and arma) on the SSD. My old HDD is now the one i use for software but wonky stuff keeps happening. So far everything but games (and a few updates) runs properly which leads me to believe its all related somehow.
The weirdness:
BF2 will install but when it tries to update to 1.1 before installing bf2: special forces i get the message that the update has failed. So second time around after, a thorough uninstall, reboot etc. i skip BF2: SF and goto install patch 1.41. It installs correctly, i try to install 1.50 and i get the message that my game is already up to date. I try to install PR and it fails.
So i say forget BF2 and try to install GRID. it installs fine but hangs on the splash screen.
So i say forget GRID, something is clearly wrong with my PC, I try to install the sims 3 and get (not a valid win32 application, or something like that) when trying to launch the game. Eventually i got it to work (the launcher is still broke) and try to install the WA expansion. It tries to update the game before installation and -wattayaknow- update fails.
So i move on from games frustrated and install MS office 2007. It all works fine. I try to update it however and get error code 92d and the update fails.
All other programs on my non-OS HDD including CS5 suite, utorrent, objectdock, itunes, creative x-fi related software, run and update without issues. Also i guess i should mention after every borked game install check disk will run if i reboot but it finds no errors.
Anyone have any idea whats going on. The only tweak i did for my system was enable AHCI mode for my SSD.
