WASD turret rotation discussion

Tank and APC turrets turning around the WASD keys with smaller mouse adjustments were suggested many times so mind that this is kind of discussion to see how many people would like this in and why?
Here's my opinion on this:
I would like this idea as it will add a bit of realism in that part of the game because now turrets turn extremely fast, because mouse sensitivity is adjustable which means I hate when I am flying fast with a helicopter and a tank or BTR follows me with his turret and fires his Autocannon or Coax on me, I am sure that that is not possible to do IRL as it is in PR.

So what do you think?

For starters, mouse sensitivity can not change the max speed the turret can turn at, it only helps you reach the max speed quicker.

There is also nothing unrealistic about a modern MBT or APC being able to shoot down a chopper that's in range of its guns, if you get shot down that's simply you being in the wrong place and you shouldn't be "flying fast" next to an APC/tank. Speed only helps if your very close to the target, at range, speed dosen't mean that much as the turret can easily turn much higher than the speed your moving in the distance.


Now to your main point, having the turret rotate on WASD would be really, really, really bad without full and proper turret stabilization as every bump you will go over you will have to compensate for and doing that with a mouse is hard enough, doing it with a keyboard, even if your really good with the keyboard is much harder and as such, until we get turret stabilization, its not an option. Also for someone who has been on the full CR2 gunner simulator a few times and even took control of a real CR2's turret, I can tell you that the turret can spin incredibly fast on the CR2, as most modern MBTs and having it set up with WASD wouldn't give you the full effect of the real CR2's controls (and even less for other MBTs tbh) as even thou you control it with a small thumb pad you may find on a PS1 controller, you still have a few levels of speed on it depending on how hard you press the thumb pad in any direction where with the WASD keys, you only have 2 speeds, which is not moving, or moving at 100% speed which would make fine tuning a target very, very hard and unrealistic, epically if we where going to match the r/l full speeds of every tanks turret.


As such, the mouse is the most realistic option at this point in time and if we get full turret stabilization in PR at any point, then we might look into changing the controls off the mouse but until then, its not going to happen.

i thought that Arma did WASD turret rotation and it didnt work out to well.

someone once sugested/asked if the turret could be controled via joystick. it seems like it would be much more realistic and immersive, the problem is sensistivity. you set it up to turn the turret at the max speed, your going to have problems with accuracy. slow it down to increase your accuracy and your turret may not move fast enough to engage threats.

Its possible now, just set your vehicle mouse input to be both the mouse and joystick, but a joystick still is much worse than the mouse at trying to counter the non-stabilized turrets.

Like I said, if we did manage to do true turret stabilization, then we might consider changing the controls, ie, to a joystick/game pad but making a stick/game pad a requirement would be pretty shitty for a lot of players.

To be fair it is a discussion and not really a suggestion but since there isn't anything to discuss since I've already laid down the clear reasons as to why we are not going to do this there is no reason to keep this topic open.
