XM25 Individual Airburst Weapon System

The XM25 is an airburst grenade launcher derived from the XM29 OICW.

It fires 25 mm grenades that are set to explode in mid-air at or near the target. A laser rangefinder in the gun is used to determine the distance to the target. The user can manually adjust the detonating distance by up to ten feet (3 m) shorter or longer. The gun automatically transmits the detonating distance to the grenade in the firing chamber. The grenade tracks the distance it has traveled by the number of spiral rotations after it is fired.[1] These features make the XM25 more effective than traditional grenade launchers at the task of hitting targets that are behind cover or dug into the ground.

The system has been developed by Heckler & Koch and Alliant Techsystems, while the target acquisition/fire control is developed by L-3 IOS Brashear. The most recent deployment plans call for a purchase of 12,500 XM25s at a projected cost per weapon system of $25,000.[2]

In the summer of 2010, the U.S. Army began field testing the XM25 in Afghanistan. The initial per unit cost of the early models range from $30,000 to $35,000. The army plans to purchase 12,500 XM25s in 2011 and have them fielded by 2012, enough for one XM25 system in each infantry squad and Special Forces team. [3][4]

According to U.S. Army project manager for new weapons, Colonel Douglas Tamilio, the rounds for the XM25 will cost about $24 apiece. [5]

Alliant Techsystems has indicated that the rifle may later use bullets with smaller explosive charges which will stun opponents rather than killing them. [5]
Today i have read, that the US army ordered 12500 units, to reinforce its men in Afghanistan with this weapon system. I think most of you will remember the "PK-74 AR-Rocket" from battlefield 2142. But i doubt it would be possible to implement this airburst grenade launchers in the bf2 engine..

"It's not worth all the work"? Yeah, because being able to hit someone hiding behind a wall without having to flank is no big deal.

Doesnt the laser guided missile in BF2 have like a "max" range?

So if you code it to be editable in python, IE like with the grenade launcher you can set the range of explosion?

This is false, the main US Army buy is not going down at this juncture, and the 12,500 units are nowhere near being purchased. Until this first set of weapons sees through their tour in Afghanistan, no one is buying any more weapons. When they return the Army has said they will make improvements based on feedback, then move to issue more of them to begin issuing them on a widespread basis. By no means are these going to be ubiquitous any time soon.
Finally, with testing complete and Army approvals in place, 12,500 systems will be produced and issued beginning in early 2014 ? enough to support one per infantry squad and Special Forces Team.

These things are theoretically quite awesome, but they've only been in combat for 1 month at this point. I won't predict how that is going to turn out, because it could easily be a widespread success or a complete failure. It's an awesome fuzed grenade launcher, but on the other hand its a very heavy weapon filled with somewhat fragile electronics.

In short, there's no reason to expect the XM-25 in PR anytime soon.

It's on deployment trials. So there'll most definitely be an XM25A1 to fix issues.

I also have doubts that we could simulate this weapon realistically in BF2. Sure we can set a distance at which the round detonates....but I don't think we can make that adjustable.

From the picture on that wiki page, it makes me believe that it only fires grenades.
If that is the case, I don't want this in PR ever. Firstly, the grenade exploding effects would be ghastly to deal with if you ran into a whole squad of USMC.

Second, there wouldn't be any more aiming... Just fire in the general area until something dies, I see a wave of arcady playing coming with it.

Do it like the airburst mortar round?

Give it proximity code for infantry, kind of like AA missiles, if that actually works properly. :p

Boilerrat, what do you mean? "Ran into a whole squad of USMC"...this isn't going to be issued to every single guy.

I dunno man...looks pretty sketch. I don't think this would be good for gameplay at all, even though It might be f***ing cool.

Implement the XM25 or XM28 or the one which can be switched between .50 and Grenade launcher. Give that asset (or hand-gun) only one round in total which needs to be reloaded with one small ammo bag (gives again that one round). That's fair play and balanced.
