If you want to record a video the main things that are stressed are CPU (for calculating and compressing the images) and the HDD (for saving the images onto).
If either CPU or HDD are too slow your video will end up choppy. GFX imho are not stressed by FRAPS that much.
Connecting the external HDD via USB2 or similar is not advisable when directly saving onto it. You will want to connect it to either eSATA or use an internal HDD to buffer the video and after recording move it onto the external drive.
"Resource Monitor" can plot you some graphs of what is being used most when recording vidoes. You should maybe check out what is bottlenecking your PC right now.
